Thought I would share a couple pics I took on Thursday of some remarkably visible wake vortices. We were flying at 5k feet around 130 knots set up for airdrop of buoys in the Pacific. Videos are of the actual drops in case anybody is interested, pics are below that.

So what happens to all of the packaging when it hits the surface? Does it just start beeping while inside of its box? Does it dissolve? Is there someone waiting for it? Inquiring minds want to know........:D

btw: kool video! ......and watch out for those straps man!:p

Pretty. Very artistic. Wonder if they correlate with the golden spiral and Fibonacci numbers in mathematics?

Heck, I used to see these all the time flying my old L-3. Then I figured that it was the dirty windshield. If I remember correctly, "Lou 747" posted several shots of this type of thing with a 747. I have seen them hang around for 20 minutes near ground level in the right conditions. We figured that it took the life of a young pilot after he flew into the wake of a low level flyby of the number 1 747. I have experienced it twice and I managed to escape any trouble but it is a helpless feeling.

The parachute rigging is secured to the pallet with salt blocks that dissolve in the water. Then wave action just sorta separates it all. There are actually three buoys per crate that then drift around gathering atmospheric data.

Flying formation it was something to be cognizant of, particularly when slow and close like during an airdrop.

A wake vortex caught out Joe Walker when his F-104 collided with the #2 XB-70 during that infamous publicity flight, destroying both aircraft.

Of course! Nature abhors straight lines and has been an entangled lover with what Mr. Fibonacci distilled since long long before he was ever born

Some of the craziest clouds I've seen in a long time. Looks like a fleet of inbound alien saucers.

Lenticulars, do not want to get close to those in an aircraft.

Yup, glider pilots use lenticulars to find mountain waves for lift, but generally do not fly into them. These guys were doing weather research and did fly into mountain wave/lenticulars. Landed safely. Eight engines give pretty good yaw inputs if you know what you are doing. Bet the pilot was still using the rudder pedals just to make himself feel better.

This wasn't a turbulence incident as I remember. Yaw oscillation. No big problem, tho. Asymmetrical thrust and spoilers did the trick....oh yeah, the pilot had a hand in it, too.

Sometime I will have to post a few of my other pics... I carry a monkey mask on every flight so I can take a pic with anyone who falls asleep. Everyone from new copilots, commanders, a reporter from the Wall Street Journal. No one is safe. Still waiting to get my name patch “Chip Manzie”
