One season down for Latifi. Any opinions on how the other Canadian driver with an ultra-rich daddy did?

Wasn't he outqualified 17 times out of 17 races by his team mate?

Really hard to judge anyone driving a Williams at the moment.

Let's see IF Latifi is hungry enough to beat Russell.

It's possible these rich kids I e. Stroll, Latifi, & Mazepin don't need to be hungry enough to beat their team-mates. They're loaded at daddy's expense.

  5. Over and over and over again. The money has to come from somewhere to break into the big time.

I only wish I came from money....God knows I wanted in......'had the knowledge and the skill...'just not the moola. ;)

    I wish them well.

  7. 'Well aware, Mr bill. That's why I posted what I did. To counter.

I have no resentment. I tried like bloody 'ell. 'Enjoyed every minute of the struggle too.
I wouldn't trade those times for anything....welll.....maybe for coming from a wealthy family..... ;)

Regardless of how much money someone comes from there should be zero resentment if any rich kid breaks into F1. To get there you had to beat out a ton of other rich kids and will have had to dedicate yourself with a work ethic that is well beyond the waste of a life so many wealthy children have. Money or not making it that far is a TON of work.

That said it appears as though on the F1 level Latifi is not making much of an impact. Given the sheer number of seasons he did in lower categories (all super well financed with mixed results) this should not come as a big surprise. While I think Latifi has the financial horsepower to keep himself in F1 he won't last long because there will be other better drivers with enough money to push him out.

    I don't have a problem with it.

It's the performance side that I take issue with.

He was useless pre F1, and is still useless right now. The car doesn't matter.

I'm not a fan of Latifi. "Met" him in the pits of Montreal. Nice enough guy but probably not made for great stuff in F1.

So, the FIA gives Superlicences to "useless" drivers?

    Who would have thought ...

I have certainly nothing against Latifi, and wish him good luck.
I am glad we have these rich kids coming to F1, involving their fathers to revigorate it.
Driving at Williams, he will have all the excuses he needs for poor performance anyway.
I may have questioned his father obtaining for him a seat at McLaren though, even if he owns 10% of the company.
The grid cannot be only made of Verstappen, Hamilton, Vettel and Leclerc.

I agree that the sport needs and has always had a component of wealthy drivers. Before the mid-2000's there are endless lists of 'also ran' F1 drives who were nowhere near the GP level for ability. Nowadays the spread in performance between these drivers and the superstars is smaller due to a much more competitive junior formula ladder with many more well financed drivers fighting for a small number of F1 openings.

Latifi appears to be on the lower end of the current F1 field; a fine driver by any metric but on the lower end of ability and unlikely to improve given how long his junior career was.

Wealthy gentlemen drivers have always been part of the sport since the fifties. Nothing new at all.

Same goes for the cars: Wealthy drivers bought their F1 cars directly from one of the manufacturers. For instance the iconic sharknose F1 Ferrari that run at the Spa GP was also run in yellow by a group of Belgian racers who bought the cars directly from Ferrari. And that was a 100% clone of the original.

5 seasons of F2/GP2 (and more racing before that). 11 wins in 8 seasons of single seater racing. Yes he's useless.

Do you have a problem understanding context or something, or are you deliberately obtuse? Compared to the average person on this forum, he's a superstar. Compared to the average F1 driver, he's utterly useless.

    No. And he's not.

You're right........so "utterly useless" that he's there. Again, why's he in a seat if so "useless"??? (Don't knee jerk, there is a reason. Think Williams)

How do you like them apples?........... Image Unavailable, Please Login

Money is the only reason he's there.
