Several Washington-based outlets are reporting that Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is proposing delaying the start of Donald Trump's impeachment trial by two weeks in order to give the former President's legal team time to prepare his case. The proposal was allegedly surfaced on a call with Republican Senators earlier today. If Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer agrees, it'd put the start of the trial in mid-February. The news comes on the heels of another report that Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is debating sending the articles of impeachment over to the Senate as soon as Saturday (local time). The trial cannot start in the Senate until the articles are sent from the House. Trump's fate in the impeachment trial is still largely uncertain and likely to be decided by the Republican party, which ties with Democrats for control over the chamber. If convicted, Trump could be barred from holding federal office again.

A sad indictment of the modern world. I visited a client the other week and she really is a lovely elderly woman who spends a lot of her income caring for animals. When I mentioned that I supported some of Trump's policies, her first retort was half jokingly -"please leave my home if you support Trump". I had no issue with her views but she had issues with mine. I had to explain that although I was not necessarily a supporter before Trump got into power, the fact that he made some significant changes very quickly showed how impotent (or corrupt?) previous administrations were. I was all for Obama winning in 2008 when I was in Japan but I recall a Japanese colleague at the time prophesizing that he will be the next Jimmy Carter. I dismissed it as nonsense but in fact he was right. Obama was a great orator and charismatic man but an ineffectual leader. He could've brought in significant changes in his first term but failed to do so. I think Trump upset far too many elites that had more to lose with changing the status quo, especially with respect to trade and immigration policies in place.
Actually, it takes a 67-vote majority to convict him. If that happens, then they have a separate vote, with only a simple majority required, to deny him all benefits and prohibit him from ever running for office again. Since Dumbo is the main reason they lost not only the executive branch, but also control of the Senate, and since #MoscowMitch got what he wanted from Dumbo, to wit tax cuts and SCOTUS judges, he now views Dumbo as a liability who, if he forms his own party, would siphon votes away from republicans. This could be very interesting. If Dumbo can't run, he can't have an influence on 2024. Mitch is a survivor. Ray
