i am not a ferrari owner. well until recently. my father was an avid ferrari guy going back to the GTB. he recently passed away. I come to discover that he bought a TR in 83-84 in italy. it is still there. and i am the heir to this car. i have confirmed with contacts in italy that they still have the car. i am in the USA. i am unsure of its condition as it has been sitting since the 80's. i dont believe he ever took delivery. it has EE registration. i am being told that it needs to be completely redone (which makes sense) and with EE registration, i may have a high tex consequence to try and import. seems unlikely that it will be worth what i would have to put into it for a full restoration/rebuild. it is silver on blue. i dont have a particular need for a TR and would only invest in it if it were worth it. i assume it may have value for parts but i really dont know, hence why i am on a ferrari chat forum. would like the opinion of those on the forum as to what i should consider doing. i have researched prices of TRs and they seem somewhat all over the place. unsure if the pedigree of this particular car is anything special. i have yet to see a silver/blue combo and havent seen many of the original release year. An acquaintance who does know ferrari sent me the results of multiple auctions for the TR and the pricing i have seen makes it look unworthy of a rebuild, but i truly dont know. Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Take offers in Italy. Sounds like it will always be under water. Consider it free money.

Go look at it. If you like it and it is in reasonable condition, get it to the usa.

Talk to somebody like Mike Sheehan https://ferraris-online.com/ to get the real story on importation. He may be able to recommend some contacts in Italy as well.

Sounds like your Italian contacts may be hoping to pick up a Testarossa at a dirt cheap price.

PS: post pics here and you’ll get much better input

I don't mean to be nosey but, where has this car sat for the past 35+ years? At a dealership... in a private garage... in a church shed...

You see, I was born and raised in Italy and if a Testarossa has been sitting unmolested in the same place (even if protected/private) for over thirty years then - unbeknownst to me - Italians must have turned into a bunch of missionaries and do-gooders.

That gives you the chance that it really exist. And this can mean it has been reasonably kept, I.e. it is in a reasonable condition and to put it back on the road is not a complete reconstruction.
One thing that would be important in Europe: if the car has not yet been registered in a European country it can be a problem to get a registration because today it would have to fulfill currant standards.
No exemption for historic vehicle. No idea what that means for importation in US.

I will have the VIN and more details Monday. I will likely try to sell it in Italy if it is not worth importing. I don’t have a particular need for a TR. if it had been his 250 Lusso that would be a different story. Doubt the TR will ever reach that kind of notoriety

it was known about by my father and he likely kept in communication regarding it. He was friends with umberto zanasi. Maybe it’s completely destroyed. We shall see

Wow. What an amazing story and predicament. Your first instinct is probably the right one if you just want to quickly resolve the situation. Especially if the car is already at a dealer. Just have them sell it for you and pay them a commission. The importation scenario is also intriguing though. If I found that my Dad had a Ferrari in Italy, I would want to get my hands on the car, import it, mechanically restore it and enjoy it. The question for you will come down to cost. I imported a Ferrari out of Geneva back in 2014 at a cost of $15K that included all of the inspections, taxes, freight, etc. into the US. There are many importation companies out there that specialise in autos especially exotics. Given the year of the Ferrari, you won’t have any EPA issues here in the States. You can title and tag it and enjoy the car once it’s here. The importation expense will be slightly higher if it’s a roller, not running. But I would rather have the work done locally in case there are any issues while the bugs are worked out mechanically. No recourse if the work is done in Italy. Good luck making your decision.

I’m leaning toward bringing. Unsure if taxes are going to be an issue with the EE plates. I have never brought a car from Europe to USA. I live in Palm Beach and there are certainly good, knowledgeable Ferrari guys here and elsewhere that could rebuild. I’ll keep everyone posted. Thx!

Probably an oversight but boxers were made up to the end of 83, then a few in 84..testarossa's were designed and to my knowledge not titled or available in 84 at all..they started sales in 85..So if it is an 85 it would be in the first run of protos' or production..Cant wait to see pics.
    Good Luck

Not sure how the EE plates are relevant and what impact that will make. I didn’t encounter any issues related to the car being tagged in Europe prior to importing.

+1 on calling Michael and Colleen Sheehan. I believe they will advise you on best way to handle this. I would personally not trust others.

without divulging too much personal stuff, my father and i lived very different lives. he was a semi-notorious figure from a wealthy family. we were estranged when i was a baby. i met him when i became an adult (in the 90's). he told me of the car and all of his cars (of which there were plenty of beauties). he loved cars and especially loved ferrari. but i never had his type of $$ so i didnt get to enjoy his same lifestyle. i have always enjoyed cars and have owned some very nice cars, but on a different wave length. here is a pic of my dad gassing up his 250 in the 60's and another of him on the hood of his drophead in NYC.

my understanding of the story was he was an early buyer. it was his final Ferrari purchase. he had 12 other ferraris before this going back to the 60's. i am speculating that he was given an early opportunity to buy it, then life got in the way, and he never took possession (in the states). but this is just a guess for now. once i have VIN it will tell more about the story. but i do know its silver with blue interior. unsure if there are others with this combo. i have never seen or heard of one.

Sad that you could not enjoy the car with your father years ago.... that said however, look at it as his effort to at least share it with you now. Life is complicated. I hope you find joy in this car!

so i have confirmed it is an earlier production with VIN 56951 which appears to have been made in 1985. 7000 miles. has all books, keys, paperwork. one owner (my dad). now the question is do i sell it as-is or do i rehab it? what would a vehicle as described be worth approximately? is there a market for it?

If the car was kept at Carrozzeria Zanasi—the guys that do the repairs and special paints for the factory, yes?—the car should have been well preserved. Alternatively, the car is already at the right place to be returned to service.

Hopefully the storage cost has been settled already.

We have a very trusted member here, Albert-LP.

Multiple Ferrari owner, and speaking only for myself I would trust him to handle any evaluation and business in Italy.
I have done business with him ad he is an expert on our 308/328 cars, as well as Schedoni luggage.

Condolences, or congrats, as it were.
Probate is finished and if you are ready to decide about the car, for me I would set Albert_LP in the hunt.
Italy is not that big a place, especially in Ferrari terms.

    Alan in Houston.

PS an early single mirror TR down the street here, with recent service is $130K, plus or minus.....
