The prototype was called the GR1. It came along when Shelby was back with Ford but was put aside when they decided to make the Ford GT for '05 and '06. Years later the head of Superformance told me that his company had the Ford prototype in hand and was thinking of doing something with it. My question is--kit car companies are able to avoid laws about air bags, etc.that are required on new cars on the premise they are replicating old cars.(Suoerformance already makes a copy of the original Daytona coupe) But if it is a new body shape, can they still be immune to having to conform to the hundreds of DOT/NHTSA regs? It would be ironic if they succeed because Shelby got the original Daytona coupe legal for racing (and therefore not having to make a minimum of 100) by insisting the body was just a variation of the original Cobra roadster, the same trick Enzo Ferrari used with the 250GTO saying it was bit a variation on the swb body.

Look in the general auto thread. Hemmings reported a few days ago that the NHTSA(?) has changed rules to allow kit car makers/replica makers to produce and sell cars.

The rule is the car must resemble a historic car it seeks to replicate, drivetrain must be epa certified and company sells less than 350 cars per year.
Latterly thats how the morgan roadsters got in.
The resemblance to a historic car can be very loose.

There are many ways to do this.

Look at what Scuderia Glickenhaus is doing. Or TMI Ariel Atom.
