In order to change plugs - I'd have to remove the two air intake hoses and the plastic pieces in order to access the ones in the rear? NGK is like $14 a piece AutoLite is $3 Ferrari only recommends NKG - what difference would it make if I decided to do this every 12 mos vs. every 3 years... Thanks in advance. I am not always looking to go cheap. I know enough to know that Spark Plugs are Spark Plugs - ESPECIALLY IF REPLACED REGULARLY..
I don't believe all spark plugs are created equal They are, however another of those "religious" topics like oils. Myself, I wouldn't put Autolites or Champions in my lawnmower, and I've had plugs from both Mfg's leak past the ceramic, and have even had the upper body separate from the lower. Nothing but NGK's or Denso's for me.
You want to install inferior spark plugs and then replace them annually? With your math you will only save $20 per year...and be burdened with the 3x the labor.

I replaced the Champions in my Fiat Dino with NGKs and did the same thing with the Dino 246 GT and 365 GTB/4. The wide heat range NGKs were the best thing ever for old Ferrari engines, which used to foul other plugs regularly. Sean- I would not put anything but NGKs in a Ferrari and have been using them for 45 years.
The service uses NGK PMR8B spark plugs, catalog number 6378. These are platinum spark plugs, or does NGK also produce iridium spark plugs for 599 and are they better?
Not for the 599. I have them in my 575M, but they did not make them for the next generation 2 seat GT or any F140 engine.
+599 Stick with NGK plugs for every petrol engine, from your lawn mower to your Ferrari! NGK spark plugs are the best!
There was a time (a few decades ago) when Champion plugs were the hot ticket in virtually all cars. You'll find them listed as OEM in Ferraris & Lamborghinis. In the age of carburetors and breaker point ignition, it was common to change plugs pretty often. Those days are in the past. Today, fuel injection, electronic ignition and some significant improvements in spark plug technology, keep plugs a lot cleaner. It's not unusual (or recommended) for cars to have 100K miles on the same plugs. NGK and Bosch, make good products. Champion is an obsolete brand. Replace them when necessary.
I remember when Bosch first came out with platinum plugs on my 69 911S. Made a world of difference in limiting fouling. The NGKs, however, were even better. I tried some gold Champions once on my 911, but quickly went back to the Bosch platinums. NGKs were not well known that long ago, but by 1975 they were all I would use in my Ferraris.
