They're coming over the border and ruining this place, too James Weir recaps Brats Of Byron Bay: Cashed and trashed rocking paradise (news.com.au)
While I agree totally with his precepts that we should be self-sufficient, the article is poorly supported given that services industries contribute about 3 times as much as the construction industry to GDP, and Cockatoo Docks closed in 1991! An old story recycled for the times? The only way this will change is from a grassroots level - buy Australian from Australian businesses. Boycott businesses like the Gina Reinhard enabled Chinese company that bought the Kidman beef holdings (except I’m not sure they even sell any product in Australia - probably all just goes direct to China.) and for government to enforce the rules that already exist requiring Australian content in any government supply contract. Not tariffs or subsidies - that just handed our money to foreign companies. My pet peeve - Sunrice (the only source of Australian grown rice as far as I know) doesn’t supply long grain rice! I (and all my friends who like Asian food) have to choose between Indian, Thai or Cambodian grown rice...
Yes, I’m sure they used to as well - only noticed it was NOT Aussie in the past year. I wonder if they’re exporting it all? Would make business sense if they can get a premium.
You are correct but not anymore as some of us who have to shop for ourselves try to buy Aussie where possible.
That’s a whole other (valid) argument but the worse news is a lot of the rice growers are now moving to more profitable - cotton! Jeez...
God, that's even worse. Rice and cotton should only be grown in the far north where there is plenty of water and most of it is wasted anyway. Those growers shouldn't be allowed to steal and hoard water from the Murray - Darling system, starving all the people and farmers downstream who are trying to grow legitimate crops of the types that should be grown in Australia. It' a national disgrace.
Mind you, asking what are ‘legitimate crops’ in Australia opens a whole new can of worms... Driving through the Mallee a couple of years ago I just couldn’t stop wondering why any sane person would try and farm wheat or sheep there?
There must be something wrong with me ..... I agree again !!! You can't be that smart Did you see the report the ABC did on the water thieves of the Murray-Darling ?
