I know there have been a lot of prior threads on the auxiliary air valve for a 328GTS, but frankly the information is confusing. Does anyone know how or where this part can be obtained? Are new ones still being made?

The Bosch Application Data for Ferrari that I have indicates the AAV for a 328 is 0280140229 -- this style/shape for mounting to a coolant expansion tank that seems to have a bigger, more rectangular heat sink body:

And matches the drawing of the 328 AAV in the 328 SPC:

    Image Unavailable, Please Login

(I believe the 0280140104 AAV is used on some F models where the AAV is mounted on top of the engine.)

Thanks Steve. Your diagram and part number are correct, but no one seems to have the part. Do you know of any sources? They come up on Ebay from time to time but most look really banged up.

No, unfortunately, I don't. I believe Bosch has gotten a little better lately about supplying old CIS parts (like fuel distributors), but to quote Rifledriver from a few years ago about actually getting information from Bosch "good luck with that" ;) Good Hunting!

PS Are you confirming that the Bosch PN shown on your old AAV that you know is from a 328 is 0280140229?

PPS I've also seen the 0280140209 AAV that has the same overall shape. Don't know the spec differences, but it may be more available if desparate.

I will confirm the Bosch part number once the AAV is removed next week.

    Gino:

Give Larry Fletcher at CIS Flow Tech a call (251-929-3771) or drop him an email ([email protected]).

He has encyclopedic knowledge of 1970-1980’s Ferraris and K-Jetronic systems in particular. He’ll help you diagnose your problems over the phone. His company (in Fairhope, Alabama) rebuilds AAV’s, warm-up regulators, fuel distributors etc.

He’s a great resource to the Ferrari community.

    good luck,
    Alan

I checked with the ebay vendor referenced above and he told me that the Bosch part number on his AAV was # 0 280 140 217. The AAV on a 328 is Bosch # 0 280 140 229.

Now, that’s not to say that the ebay unit won’t work just fine on a 328, but there is a difference between the units...perhaps the temperature or speed at which the valve opens and closes...this would affect how fast and how long the car fast-idles when cold.

So, has anyone out there actually used one of these alternative AAV’s on their 328? There are several variants that all have the same shape and dimensions.

    Alan,
"There are several variants that all have the same shape and dimensions" -> yes. For several cars incl. Lamborghini.

The physical size is the same.
    Here are the operating characteristic's.
Closes between 60-70 deg C water temp. Coil resistance 30-40 ohms.
The above is from my Range Rover workshop manual.
Can anyone chip in with the operating spec for a 328?

I'm a bit late to this thread so hope this is still required. The Bosch AAV p/n 0 280 140 229 spec is:
    Air volume = 34 m³/h
Heating coil resistance = 21 Ohms
The Ferrari version was more or less identical to the AAV used on the Porsche 911 SC (US variant) from 1980 - p/n 0 280 140 218 (but this Porsche version was published as only officially available until 1990).

The 0 280 140 217 is a bit different in its spec. Heating coil has a higher resistance (33 ohms vs. 21 ohms) and air volume is lower (14 m³/h vs. 34 m³/h).

Wow...that’s quite a difference in air volumes.

So the 217 unit wouldn’t increase the cold-idle rpm’s very much when compared to the 229.

The higher resistance of the 217 tells me that there are more internal heating-element windings, meaning a shorter warm-up cycle.

    Bottom line: the 217 may fit a 328 but it won’t provide a proper warm-up compared to a 229.
