You could write a book on the many and varied ways that these cars came into Australia and the taxes that may or may not have been paid depending on the method employed.

It is only relatively recently that F40's can be driven legally on Australian roads; but that hasn't stopped people doing it the whole time.

Quite a few cars were retro fitted with plexi window doors, the ex Dave Gilmour example now sports them and it left the factory with wind up versions. That's another dodgy car now doing the rounds!

With regards Aus registration, I know its a state by state thing, but the official line was no lhd cars could be used on the road back then, some used temp rego's and some had limited mileage "show" registrations, I looked to take other cars into Aus in the mid 90s and the ADR rules were hard and fast on the matter even then.

In relation to the Cannonball car, on the link I posted a contributor in the latter pages stated he used to keep a record of F40s in Aus and they said the rebuild was carried out in Aus and then it went back to Japan, only to be crashed again, so the story is hazy.

There are a number of cosworths running around in Aus sporting the same VIN as ones in the UK.

I know a guy who drove his on the road in Australia a lot from 89-91. Never had a problem. Didn't pay taxes either (legally)

If my memory serves me correctly there were less than 50 plexi window cars originally.

Re importation, the rules have been a moving target since day dot. There were periods when it was easy, periods when it was hard and periods where there were loopholes to be exploited. At the moment it's relatively easy; but expensive unless you are a legit licensed car dealer. The rules regarding registration and use on the public roads here are too complicated to go into and vary from state to state anyway.

My guess is it will be the correct body number.

Spot (weld) the difference! not even the same carbon cover. Which of these vins is the red car in Aus currently wearing?

The lower pic one has the VIN located further down, I assume the place where it should be is further up as per the top pic and whichever number was there has been ground off and filled and a new carbon cover made with a window slightly lower to hide the fact.

That classiche is dated 2014 I wonder when the blue cars one was issued? It would have to be more recent than that otherwise Ferrari should have been asking why a new VIN plate was required for an earlier approval if later on the same car needs approving showing an original VIN plate.

    What a farce

Sorry, not a matter of guessing, photos tell much more (unless totally photoshoppped).

My Australian sense of humour didn't make it through :)

The Australian car has the legitimate identity. "Interesting" but legit.

How can body number 5 be 84494? What was 79167 then? Negative body number?

LOL... Only Ferrari could get away with that, surely. Out of sequence manufacturing.
