Did I make a mistake ordering the Roma?

When I ordered this car it was back in June of last year and I did not know a lot about the car. Just looks and powerplant. Now that I have much more knowledge of the car and have driven it I don't know that I would have ordered it. I'm concerned about the busy steering wheel and the poor haptic feel feel. It was difficult for me to just get the side mirrors to move. Not sure about the "Ipad" stuck in the center and its reported not very fast response. The rear seat were a joke to me but, at the time I just overlooked them. Know I realize it would have been so much better for Ferrari to leave the basically useless rear seats out and add more trunk space. Not sure about the grill also. So for $300K I may have made a mistake. I have a F12 now I plan on selling and enjoy the simpler way that interior and display work. I would like to have a start button also. So time will tell but I really just do not know. I can always sell it I guess.

 

Have you already paid for it? Taken delivery? If not, you can cancel the order and let the dealer sell it to somehow else from his showroom floor. If you put a deposit down, that may also be returnable based on your relationship with you dealer. If you bought your F12 from him, you likely have leverage (at least a bit).

 

If you already have an F12, then yes.

If what you want is a start button and a less busy interior, why not get an 812? You can pic that up used for the same. The Roma interior is anything but simple. Those touch screens are all over it and they are not very good in terms of response. An 812 will update your interior quite a bit, and be a lot more engaging and fun to drive. I can understand why one migh choose between the Roma, or a TTS, or perhaps a Porto, but an F12? Makes zero sense. Give a used 812 a try, it is quite the step up from the F12.

This is good advice. I never really gelled with the Roma mostly due to the unintuitive haptic steering controls and i really didn't like the centre touch screen. Not the Roma's fault but mostly because i'm too old to grasp new tech.
A high spec used 812 at a large discount to new list price makes a lot of sense and a more suitable upgrade for an F12.

 

$300k? Yes. I love the Roma but the market has so much to offer in that range that is more exotic. Id keep the F12 if i were you. I also did not like the Roma huge tablet sticking out like an afterthought. The exterior is gorgeous but again, for $300k..id keep the F12 which is even more beautiful and a V12!

But what are you looking for? Some people want it bc it's new, some people want it as a DD...

 

if you are asking the question the right answer is probably do nothing and buy one when they are 150K. i can think of 20 different cars id rather spend 300k on, personally. to me you only buy one new if you are playing whatever the game is today or if you have money to burn.

 

I drove the Roma and it was a nice car just not that interesting or special. But I am in the market for an F12 so I would say buy the Roma and sell your F12 to me.

 

I was going over my thoughts on the Roma this morning as I was thinking about the interior compared to the SF90. Compared to other Ferraris, there's one word for me that really sums up the Roma inside, and that word is cheap. Compared to a Porto, Lusso, F8 etc. it feels cheap. The rings around the vents looks like something off of a Chinese knock-off bag. The touch screens has this odd soft feel to them, a bit like the stuff Porsche uses. The paddles do not feel like the alu or carbon paddles, but what is worse is the fact that the click they make, sounds a lot more "loose" and again, cheap. They will not have a click you are farmiliar with. Then there's the gated buttons. Okay, in both the SF90 and Roma this is a bit tacky imo to be honest. But work those switches and again they do not feel nice in the Roma. Of course you can go crazy with interior material upgrades, but that does nothing to change the overall cheap feel of the hardware.
I actually think the revised Quattroporte is much, and I do mean much nicer inside. It has a quality feel to everything you touch that is at least on par with my Lusso.
I don't know who the Roma is for, and I don't really care. All I know is that it is not for me and I see a car where a lot of corners have been cut.
This is before I dive into the infotainment which has super poor response on the screens, a CPU that feels too slow etc. and a sound I don't know quite how to describe.

A Roma is not an upgrade. It is just newer. Look into the 812, that's an actual upgrade.

Don’t know what “gated buttons” are.

But I disagree with the points In your review. Nothing about the car feels cheap. The vents are reminiscent of the vents in the 458 but with less friction. Not as nice as the circular FF for example but quite useable and how how do you touch the vents? For me not often.

The UI response time does become a very front and center issue tho. I keep feeling that Ferrari hasn’t turned off debug mode in the software build yet. Somewhere a lot of debug logging is going on. It has that kind of feel. Plus the nav system windows still say “develop” so something is still amiss.

I’ve spent many years evaluating UI implementations and Ferrari still seems to be struggling with how to get the details right in this large shift to more virtual interfaces. They violate a bunch of UI best practices. However, with lots of development they can make what they have work well. At least well enough. Do they have the chops to do so? Don’t know.

I’ve practiced enough now to get the system to be responsive. I’ve just started up CarPlay for the first time but I’m not yet in control of it. The manual they provide doesn’t really cover the Roma implementation! Another small problem.

By far the most annoying details are the alarms that fire off for acceleration that exceeds some threshold as well as speed limit alarms that fire off on every road. Highways included. First issue is just the annoyance factor but the other is they aren’t even correct sometimes. Speed limit on my own street is way wrong! I haven’t dug down to find out where I can turn the alarms off.

Finally I’ve gotten used to most of the new UI touch system but Ferrari needs to address the inadvertent trigger of the interface by just brushing the surfaces. Shouldn’t happen. It needs more determinism in the engagement of the UI which it doesn’t yet have.

i believe the SF90 shares the same UI so it likely will share the same problems so I hope these get addressed quickly so all the new gen cars get corrected.

The car drives very well. You can sense where the sides of the car are with the flared fenders. The steering has more feel than my FF. Brakes are great. Acceleration is on par. On MP4S tires the car feels very very planted and stable. Not a track car, a daily car. And it is a beautiful design.

Ferrari being so new to virtual UI is going to have to step up their game to compete with other auto makers that have far more experience. Doing it well will **define** how their customers view the cars! I’m not sure if Ferrari engineering quite understand that yet.

But the good news is they did supply a homelink manual! Which worked perfectly for me!

What I mean by gated are the buttons in the centre console.

It's fine that you disagree, we don't have to agree on this.

But I cannot wrap my head around how you can categorically say that nothing feels cheap inside that car.

I'm not talking about how the vents feel, I'm talking about how they look. It's pure Gucci knock-off quality to behold. Properly tacky stuff.

It won't change my mind. The interior seems cheap and poor to me and the electronics are mediocre at best. It's not even a question about liking the car in itself. I went from one car to another and could make a direct comparison. I stand by my opinion, and it is based on first hand experience

There's lots of things that feel cheap in my Pista.

 

Have a few things in my Lusso too.
Especially hate the plastic buttons for the infotainment.

Cali T, Portofino, Roma are the Ferrari's one should buy as DD, about 2 years old, with low mileage, in like new condition and after they dropped some 40%-50% in price imho. Long term, they won't be sought after but at 150k they offer a lot of fun for the money and depreciation will be reasonable.

 

To me it looks to much like a jaguar f fype r or Aston Martin both cars of which I love and will own one day. I like the Roma for what it is but at 300k I cant wrap arms around that.
It has its place just not sure what place it is yet.

I think if you have doubts about the purchase you should cancel it. Especially as you say you "have more knowledge of the car and have driven it and don't know if you would have ordered it." The purchase of a new car should be exciting not full of doubts. Nothing is set in stone. If you haven't paid for it the dealership should give your deposit back. Bottom line they can't make you buy it.

It's just inviting people who don't like the Roma to pile on. Whatever happened to "if you don't have anything nice to say ..."

Obviously, it's not an F12 or an 812 and it's not meant to be one ... it's a new GT model and they are introducing some new tech that is being implemented Italian style ... so it is going to have plenty of teething issues and problems that any new electronic technology in a Ferrari is going to be facing. That includes speed warnings that you might have to do a deep dive on to shut off -- my test drive in a Roma had the car beeping at me over 35 mph but it only took a couple of minutes to turn that off. I don't hear anyone complaining about the motor. Nothing looked "cheap" in the car to me. It's an "entry-level" Ferrari, as absurd as that concept is, and you can inflate the base price quickly with options. I enjoyed driving it and if it were an open-top car I would have considered it instead of my California T. The grill definitely looks better to me in metal instead of painted body color.

As to your original post, I would discuss it with the dealer, take the demo out for another lengthy drive, explore the settings, and if you find the car is not to your liking, get something else. I think there is a lot of demand for this car and they hopefully will be open to it.
