In the process of changing all belts and idlers, I find that the water pump shaft has a bit of sideways movement. Its very slight, but I can hear it and see it. Its the shaft, not a loose pulley. Has anyone else noticed this? Is it normal?

Yeah, I thought it would need to be replaced. The car is a 1999 360 Modena with 18,000 miles, so I had this tiny hope that, maybe, it was normal. Thanks for the responses.

For the ones who DIY: Where did you guys source your replacement pump? I see a few part numbers online, what's the last letter on the p/n? Is it just a revision? 176173A vs. 176173D vs. 176173R, or something else? I see also rebuilt vs. new?

Looks like "D" might be the only one available. Not sure if there's a cross referenced part from something else for the water pump.

Did it came with the pulley from Eurospares? Was it the /A you ordered?

Wow, I have 45000 miles (2004) and no issues with the pump...hmmm. Most vehicles will go 150-200000 or so without a water pump going bad. I am surprised at 12000 miles needing replacement.

I replaced mine @ ~36k because bearing sounded fatigued but had no other issues than that... It was a "while I was in there" situation while replacing the Heat Exchanger preventively...

We just rebuild them on the V12s. Not possible on the V8s?
