Good article pointing out the laundry list of issues that might arise. https://www.forbes.com/sites/lorenthompson/2020/07/13/hanging-new-engines-on-60-year-old-b-52-bombers-is-not-easy-here-are-some-risks/?sh=275203e39219 .
Hard to believe something like that was still flying in 1936 when they were flying early Bf-109s in Spain. Huge changes from 1935-1940. Of course, P-26s were used in the Philippines early in WW-II because it was all they had.
Compared to an F/A-18E/F, they are small. Single engine vs twin, for one thing. The E/F is larger than the C/D, too.
The B-17A was a year old at that time, also. Then there was the DC-2 and 3. I wonder what the drag calculations were on that Heyford, probably about the same as a rose bush.
Well, technically an aircraft as opposed to an airplane... And technically a cool machine gun picture... Oh, what the hell. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I took a ride in a Vietnam-era Huey at an airshow a few years ago and rode in the gunner's seat. Quite a sensation!
Pretty much every 'seaplane' prop on a Cessna 180/185/206 is going supersonic at full RPM (86-88 inch dia turning at 2850 RPM), and very loud as it passes by. We would dial back the RPM on our 206 to just below supersonic (86inch @ 2700 RPM), losing some thrust due to operating at slightly reduced torque but gained more back from increased aero efficiency.
While they are not floaters, the props on the commercial 206's that operate out of Lopez must be damn near supersonic as they go over my barn at <500'............must be +150 db.......totally overwhelms my router sound 12" from my ears!
In the 80s they looked at 4 high bypass turbofans to replace the 8 Tf 33s Due to dimensions pylons and wing flex, the obstacles were insurmountable. So 8 similar dimension and weight motors makes sense. Its not as complex as the article indicates, they managed to reengine Kc135 with cfm 53s and those were very different dimensions and power.
yes they need a new strut, and the whole weight of the assembly has to work with a wing designed around the twist and bending loads created by the original powerpack. Seems to me the biggest hurdle is the design of the plane is not digitized, so theyll need some old fashioned engineers to figure it out and not too many of those around.

F15 has and probably will be my favorite ..i remember being younger at one of my first airshows and a f15 took off with full afterburners .. i was in awe ..tear of happiness came to my eye Sent from my moto g(7) using Tapatalk
