I have the Stabilus struts 1831BR 0300N (I assume that's a part number) on my 328. I have replaced them twice and they have never been better than barely adequate as far as holding the engine hood in the full open position.

At lower temps the struts won't hold it open at all, it just drops back down. Even in warm weather they don't allow the hood to stay fully open.

Does anyone have a brand or part number for a pair of struts that actually WILL hold the hood open?

Look up sgs-engineering.com. In the uk. Put ferrari 328 in the search box and they list whats available. Only about £20 each. Never used them but big supplier

Try a search using the F PN "60592800" for 11 prior threads discussing this -- I didn't review them all, but one said the originals were rated at 350N force (and hard to find); whereas, the F part suppliers are now supplying 300N force (so may be why the recent ones you've purchased seem marginal).

I did a search before posting but what I didn't find was an actual statement (maybe I missed it) that a particular brand/model actually WORKED well as opposed to simply fitting correctly. I can vouch for my Stabilus units fitting perfectly, easy to install, etc...but they suck as far as actually holding up the hood! :)

Thanks, Thorn - that's what I was hoping to find, a product review as far as function. I ordered' 'em!

I have those same Stabilus shocks and agree they are just barely adequate at best. Poking around the internet I found some one who showed the specs for that part. Using those specs I found a shop that puts struts together to your specs. I think this probably works for us, but I say that without actually getting off the couch and measuring anything in the garage. https://www.gasspringsshop.com/configurator/

****EDIT: Those Amazon struts are 1/3 the price, sold as a direct replacement specifically for our car, and someone verified they work. Yeah, never mind to the above!******

I had my original rebuilt by Strut Wise and I ask them to add extra pressure or gas inside and I they did, now every time I pull the latch for the rear deck, it will open all the way up without helping it, the only problem is you can’t just close it partially, if you do, it will just go back up again.

I had mine rebuilt by a place in Canada. I like keeping the original parts if they can be rebuild. They work great.

I replaced, but kept, my originals. I could send them off and not worry about time.

Well, I gotta' admit that having "BOXI" in bold white letters on the strut would not go far on the concours circuit! But I figure if I get annoyed with the label, well...that's why they make black spray paint. :)

WOW!!!! received the Boxi's today and installed them. HOLY MOLY, what an improvement. If I lift the hood maybe a foot-18 inches, it lifts itself the rest of the way. I've had 3 sets of struts on the car and never had even a fraction of that 'lift capability." Mighty impressive! Thanks Thorn!!

IMO, the only reason to NOT buy these struts and forget all others is if you must have original "ferrari parts" for whatever reason. FWIW, the "Boxi" logo is not particularly prominent at all.

I thought you'd probably be pleased... glad to hear it! :)

(BTW, the "auto-lift" is certainly an occasional crowd pleaser...)

So are these BOXI units a straight bolt in affair? It can't be that easy ...not on a Ferrari :)

Yep, totally bolt on - took maybe 10 minutes to remove the old struts, install the new Boxi's. :)

I put stabilus 60592800's on my car about 15 years ago and they still work great. And as thorn says my deck is open more than it is closed also.
