Are stock-looking replacement rivets available? They look unusual. What type are they? It must be fairly common to pull out the spare tire well. I am surprised it is pop riveted in place. I am bringing my car in for an R12 recharge soon and worry that I will need to gain access to (potentially) leaky stuff under the well for the spare wheel.
The rivets are nothing special, good ol' aluminum from what I can see. DO NOT take out the circumferential rivets holding the top and bottom of the spare tire well together, it's not needed. If the well doesn't come out you have missed some rivets, trust me on this one. And in my car the rivets were painted over and barely visible in many places.
I was wondering about the 9 rivets for the upper rear section which appear to be larger diameter compared to "regular" pop rivets. It would be nice to use exact replacements if I need to remove the upper rear cover. They have not been painted in situ. ... Probably I can just measure and get something similar from a pop rivet store, somewhere. Exact is aways nice.
Here is a pic of all the rivets, well mostly, can't see the ones that hold the upper and lower together. The rivet heads for ALL of the blue ones are the same size at least on my car and should NOT be drilled as they help nothing. The rivets that are to be drilled are all the same size on my car. Wow! Cool diagram. I was confused about what you guys were describing. The rivets that I was asking about were the ones that hold down the top fiberglass cover that goes against the windshield and covers the master cylinder, etc. Sorry.
Just to update this thread, you will notice that there is a black rubber ducting hose that installed. Do NOT install that. The original is available here: https://www.butlertechnik.com//webasto-or-eberspacher-heater-80mm-flexible-ducting-4151801-p1546/s1559 . And I needed to be reminded which rivets I need to drill out.
So, here we are again. Would one of you folk take a look at the routing of the large black air duct and tell me if it is supposed to go as it is now OR behind the red bracket just behind the radiator. Also is the steering rack really chrome plated?? Thanks all, Lester Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
... and, is there anyone out there that could measure the heads of the rivets in an unmolested car? And/or send a few pics please. The idea of self tapping screws is certainly a good idea but just in case. Lester
Thank you Sir, that was my thought just looking at the routing. Damn, why chrome plate one of the few pieces that most will never see and that doesn't require it for any obvious reason.
Ok, I'll ask, what was it designed for? Still looking for pics of an unmolested spare tire area with size for the rivets.
"Behind bracket and in front of battery". Behind is a word describing towards the rear. Is that towards the rear? How about German? I cannot be more clear in English.
Behind can be relative to the view. Behind me is always behind me but in reference to the door that changes if I change my orientation. Hence my picture. Warum auf Deutsch? Jetz Ich kann nur ein bisschen . ;-) Corrected picture added, thank you for the clarification!
Never. What is a left hand drive car? Is it view relative? That would be stupid. There is one right side, one left side, one front and one rear. Quit wasting everyones time.
The battery is held down by a base clamp on my 1977. There absoultely should be a tray there, although is not cared fro it ight rust away.. It welds to the framing, and then the batery tray clamps down the batery. I shorted top terminal battery is HUGE bad news, and a real possibilty to way out Ferraris are packaged.
