Saw this pop up this morning. I like the legit street cars channel on YouTube, he mostly does mid 00s German cars, AMGs and the like wiht some American stuff thrown in.
However, this week he did a mechanical review of a 308 with a snapped timing belt and I thought some here might want to see it.

Thanks - good video. Both guys misstated that the timing belt service is engine-out however.

It's engine out when you snap it :)

Did he pull the motor with the front exhaust manifold still attached and the a/c compressor bolted in ?

    40% of 30K - about 12000 for engine out/teardown/rebuild seems cheap too.

Is it not? I have no idea, I assumed it was but I guess not.

    I thought so too.

I'd have to watch again but it might have been 40% less than 30k, which is like 18k but I might be wrong.
Of course it looks like there wasn't major damage either. I'm sure that adds up fast.

If the damage is only the one valve (granted if they are the original sodium valves you would replace the whole lot) I would think $12K is a bit steep,,
Going by his estimation of 60 hrs at approximately $100/hour, surely there isn’t $6K worth of parts..

And to be honest I would also be worried that the mechanic working on the engine doesn’t know that a Timing belt change isn’t an engine out job..

Obviously this guy wasn't around back in the day, he seemed amazed by things that were "normal" for high performance engines in the mid 1970's. His "low" hp comments were a bit out of context, he should check the hp ratings for Mustang and Camaro of the same vintage, 5 liter engines with 160-175 hp were the norm. Sorry, not impressed.

I wouldn't assume $100/hr in any major US city for auto repair. I'd guess $125 is low and $150 is probably the norm.

    Haven't watched the vid.

Also, I suspect I can buy an entire engine for less than $30K.

I was quoted AUD$7k for a complete top end rebuild, granted this was 10 odd years ago..

That's a beautiful 308 stunning color combo. Haven't watched the video yet but read the comments here. True on the h.p. comments I remember it was a big thing when performance cars of the 80'***** the 200 plus h.p. mark and came close to 6 second 0-60 times.

He will be a lot wiser by the time he has figured out how to get the timing spot on

I didn't catch that he said he was a Ferrari expert, just that he's a mechanic and the shop he uses has a broken 308 in for repair. I was really surprised how much he got right, I was really expecting some Youtuber making a whole bunch of stuff up and getting stuff wrong.

That video was total rubbish and I would like those 16 minutes of my life back. There is a lot of excellent content out in YouTube and this was not it. The guy got so many things flatly wrong that it is an embarrassment that this video is passed on as a knowledgeable view.

Gives me an idea, I might be able to talk my oldest into manning a camera and putting together a film series on one of the builds... Editing will be a pain... I'll leave that to him.. Give him something to do..
I'll make sure to get a bunch of things wrong a little bit... Keep the entertainment value up. I don't know..
Breaking things on the dyno is always fun to watch! Gallows humor..

There is another YouTuber who is hacking up a GTB with a Sawzall. He has gathered quite a crowd of onlookers including me. If there's gonna be a train wreck you wouldn't look away, would you?

Looks like that sodium exhaust valve took a good hit without breaking! Hope this is good news for us early 308 owners.
