I was a big fan of Rod the Mod in his days with the Faces. Not so much the "Do You Think I'm Sexy" Rod and its sequels. As far as the auction results: Even with the celebrity history, the Estimate of $35,000 - $40,000 is irrationally exuberant for a TLC-needing '83 auto. No reserve? I'm guessing $21,000.

I remember this car from the ACD Fest auction ~20 years ago. It was a bit needy looking then.
Mileage and price were similar as I recall, so someone banking on Rod's celebrity for appreciation has been disappointed.

If Straman is the preferred convertible version I'd hate to see the poor ones.

About 15 years ago my company hosted a huge conference each year for high yield investors and issuers held at the Phoenician in Scottsdale. We always had some big name acts and speakers performing over the three day conference. We had Billy Joel for a concert, Jay Leno at lunch, Michael Milken at lunch, etc.

One year we had Rod Stewart do a concert for us. Before it started, I was thinking, "Well, I like Rod Stewart well enough but how much other than "Maggie May" is he going to perform that will keep us interested for a full concert?" Boy, I could not have been more wrong as he cranked out hit after hit after hit with lots of enthusiasm and showmanship. I kept saying to myself "Oh yeah, he did that one too and it was a great song!" I had forgotten how many hits that he had over the years.

His performance of "Forever Young" was the most outstanding performance of that song I have ever heard and he had all of us stodgy bankers and corporate types literally standing on our chairs in that hotel ball room. It was one of the most amazing performances that I have ever seen, before or since. Far and away better than any other corporate "mail it in" concert.

Wasn't Rod Stewart who, after several failed marriages, said "Now when I think that I want to get married to someone I just buy her a house and save myself the pain and aggravation" or something to that effect?

This car, 43385, sold for $44,520 including buyer's premium in 2001 at the Kruse auction in Scottsdale, described as being in "3" condition. Mileage was 22,914 which means that the car, now with "near" 23K miles, basically has not been driven in the past 12 years.

    Caveat emptor!

Now here is a golden opportunity to manual swap a 400ia. Stuff a Chev into this ratty convertible then peddle it for enough to cover the cost of the whole project.

Just adding Documentation for the future...

BTW... What is on the ground (connected to the car), as seen in the photo showing the car's rear end?

    Cheers,

Plot twist uncovered today on Bring A Trailer. Turns out that there is no evidence that this was a Straman conversion, and Richard Straman weighed in to confirm that it is definitely not. Seems that the car was misrepresented for many years in multiple sales. It does seem to have been owned by Rod Stewart, though he has not yet weighed in!

Whether it is a Straman or not does not change its market value. If it were a Pavesi or a Lorenz this would even give it more value. I doubt the previous sellers attempted to voluntarily mislead potential buyers.

For the lack of better information, the conversion does seem to be well made, the chassis stiffeners are (slightly) less crude than their Straman equivalent, and I personally like the way the car is cut at trunk level. Also the colour combo is a perfect match to a cab conversion. Looking at the older pictures it does also seem the car was refined and a few bits and odds have been fixed.

The only issue that will lower the value of this car is : it's a cab...

(A regular 400 with this colour and such low mileage would easily find a new home)

    Good day All,

Chassis 43385 is now in Canada and offered for sale for $79900 CAD (about $58900 USD)

    https://www.autotrader.ca/a/ferrari/400/mont-royal/quebec/5_52037325_ct2006328142733706/?showcpo=ShowCpo&ncse=no&ursrc=hl&orup=2_15_375&pc=T6H%202L5&sprx=-1&modalXS=1

Interestingly, the mileage is approx the same as when I posted about it in 2013 (e.g. 23000 miles)

    Cheers,

    Sam

10 years of no miles will take a toll unless the owner invested in an annual maintenance program.

A smog pump, maybe feeding the exhaust with the pipes next to the oil pan ?

Also known as an "air injection pump". I'd guess that the added chassis bracing near the oil pan (and extending behind it) was/is related to the convertible conversion to (partially) compensate for the roof removal.
