488 New wheels, tires, suspension for the 488

I track my GT3 with Cup2s as well, but for WE drives I'd say that's one big ass tire. But hey it's a free market!

 

Thinking of doing the same setup for street use, will be interested in your impressions over the stock setup. My motivation for going to the 21 rear is to get more meat and hopefully better traction under the rear.

 

That is the complete opposite of what would be a good track setup.

The last thing the 488 needs is a massive rear tyre that hinders rotation. The car already suffers from understeer, a 355 is only going to make it much worse when the fronts remain stock.

A great 488 track setup is 19's with 265 in the front and 305 in the back.

The chariot sized steamrollers are cosmetic, not for performance.

yeah of course everyone’s absolutely entitled to do whatever he/she wants. I just thought such large tire may not be felt as much unless you drive hard. But would be very glad to know how the experience is with them. Hope you enjoy them!

My comment had nothing to do with your choice. It's not my car, I could care less.

This is a forum where enthusiasts exchange advice, experiences, suggestions and thoughts. When the subject of whether or not such modifications are performance enhancers, I think it is of benefit to our community to post some info on the subject.
I just offered up some simple facts as Petrolhead#32 was of the impression that wider rears with a larger diameter was of benefit for track use, that's all there is to it.

It's your car to do with as you see fit, and if you like the result for what you are doing, then everything is as it shoumd be.

Il Co-Pilota, would you say the same for 458? I currently have MSS4s 295 in the back. Even though it's a mid engine car, I do feel a lot more grip with the GT3 which uses Cup2s 305. I'm assuming this grip difference has a lot more to do with the tire TYPE vs the size, correct? If I got Cup2s 295 for the 458 I assume I'd feel a big difference, right?

What would say is the best option for the 458 for track and spirited driving? PZeros?

Yes, it has to do with the type of tyre, but also the fact that the GT3 has a LOT more grip than a 458.

There's not a ton of good options for the 458 as far as tyres go, and unless you go 19" the Cup 2 is not an option.

I'd go with either Trofeo R in 245/35R20 and 295/35R20 or Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3 in 245/35R20 and 305/35R20. The latter slots in between the MPSS and Cup 2. It's a bit more aggressive than the MPSS but not really a track day shoe like the Cup 2. In other words, the Trofeo R is what you are looking for. Just make sure you add 0.5 degree of neg camber on each wheel. That will completely transform the 458.

I also went with a 20/21" (245/35-20 fronts and 355/25-21) set up.... This is just a weekend cruiser and will not see track time. I have lowering springs (Novitec) and plan to get them installed soon.

That stance is actually pretty good on stock springs, thinking about doing the same setup myself. How does the car ride/handle with the oversized rears?

 

Questions:
- If I want to keep the original wheels, how big a tire can I get?
- For you to get this 335 in the rear, I assume you had to buy an after market wheel, correct?

 

That Pista with those wheels looks stunning.

But for me it’s a shame you’re not tracking that animal. It actually hurts!

 

Biggest you can use on stock 458 wheels is the F12 tyre size.

255/35R20 up front and 315/35R20 in the back.

It will still slow you down a bit, but less so than the overly wide wheels and the car will steer better.

My track car for the last couple years is this GT2RS. This is the actual car that Randy Pobst, Andy Pilgram,and a couple others set some track lap times with. It has 7K track miles and is a beast. I took it my good friend Graham Rahal's shop GRP and we did exhaust, tune and intake and picked up 100rwhp. I recently sold it to a good friend of mine and purchased a Yellow one that is MINT. I plan the same mods as the red car as soon as GRP can get it on their schedule. The only reason I sold the red one and got the yellow is I didn't want two red cars and the Pista had to be red for me. lol

Oh, no not Trofeo. I read it as largest tyre in general.

Trofeo will be 245/35R20 and 295/35R20. The Trofeo is a big tyre for its size and that size has more than enough grip for the 458.
