I have some business to attend to this week. My wife is joining me.

I would love to a few nice dinners, but Alinea (for example) seems to be take-out only or something.

    Any tips or advice?

    Thanks!

    Matt

Chicago Updates Reopening Guidelines, 10 Diners Allowed at Outdoor Tables
    • Indoor capacity at bars, restaurants, and social events will remain limited to the lesser of 50% capacity or 50 people per room or floor.
    • In each setting, six feet of physical distance must be maintained between different parties.
Welcome to Chi-town! I'd call the restaurant in question before you go, just to make sure. Things are changing frequently with numbers rising again!:(

Is your hotel in downtown Chicago? I’m sure the concierge will have updated info. These are the restrictions as of this date. Both Mayor Lightfoot and Governor Pritzker are closely monitoring the COVID numbers. No way to predict the future, although I wish I could...

It is downtown, and I am vaccinated, with a card to prove it, if that matters.

    Thanks!

The Purple Pig is walking distance. Great food and fun place (at least pre-COVID, haven’t been back yet). They have won a James Beard Award.

Where are you staying and do you have any particular cuisine you're interested in? Sepia has a great prix fixe menu and Maple & Ash for steak. Gibsons Italia (newer/trendier, on the river) or the one in Gold Coast (area is known as Viagra Triangle) is also a solid spot for steak.

Most restaurants are back open.. limitations mentioned above and I doubt they will change anytime soon. Having said that it feels fairly open, you will have to wear a mask to enter the restaurant (some may take temp, some may not) and enter your hotel or other public locations. While at the restaurant you can take off your mask once you sit down, some places ask that you put back on when staff is at the table.. 50/50 on whether or not they care if you do. Also most have done away with physical menus and instead use QR codes.

I’m OK with all of that.

I’ll be at the Waldorf Astoria, and I’m sure I can rely on their concierge for advice.

What was Joe Marchetti’s restaurant called?

He used to park his Daytona spider out front in the 80s.

Edit: it just came to me: the Como Inn.

I had dinner a few weeks ago at El Ideas and would highly recommend it. Something different and off the beaten path but very personal with only a handful of diners at a time. The chef/owner is involved in everything. Cooking, explaining, brought plates to our table, chatted with us throughout the night. Fun experience.

I last saw Joe in late 2000 or early 2001. Friendly as ever. I believe his son J.P. was playing piano, but that could be a wishful memory. Beyond the great company, Joe was always welcoming when we had HS swim team banquets there. The staff always made the kids feel special. Just an all around great guy. Fulton street is near Joe’s old place and is a hot spot for great restaurants.

Only Michelin star restaurant I’ve done a keg stand in. Highly recommend though off the beaten path from Waldorf. BYOB as well.

Hahaha! I could totally see that. Phillip was awesome and very inviting. We stayed at the Sofitel in the Gold Coast and it was maybe a 15-20 minute Uber during Saturday evening (St. Patricks day to boot) traffic. Definitely worth the trek. And the BYOB, we walked in with a couple bottles of champagne and they had an ice bucket ready next to our table.
