I noticed a little bid of black smoke coming from the exhaust when the engine is idling, engine warmed-up well. I replaced the little needle valves in each carburator which should keep the float at a constant level and the smoke is gone. Subject valves where replaced 12000 km ago. What is your experience with the wear of these valves?
12000 km seems quite a short distance with regard to wear, when I took the old ones out they looked like new.

Wear usually shows up as a step in the normal V-shape needle. If no V-visible the wear must have been on the female side of the valve. Did you replace both pieces? They should come as a pair.

Did you check/adjust the float levels when you changed the parts? If not, in the future I’d check the float levels before changing the needle and seats. The rich situation could have been caused by float levels too high.
