Hi all I am a CT enthusiast who has always daily driven cars most people would not including a 911 3.2, BMW E30 and now 964 C4. I've worked on all of them - pulled each of their motors - and done just fine when selling them although that's not the point, the adventure and enjoyment is. Before internal combustion is over and done with I'd like to own a V12 and a Ferrari and have often admired the 456. If anyone of you are like me and use cars like this on a daily or near daily basis, please PM me to discuss. I do not commute to work by car daily but I do put a bunch of miles down, year round.

Welcome. It's a great car. Can definitely be daily driven. What specific questions did you have?

What would be incredibly helpful is to hear from an owner who self-maintains all of their vehicles to hear a comparison. Extra credit if that person has worked on an aircooled 911. I do just about everything myself including engine work, electrical, exhaust, suspension/brakes, air conditioning. Things I don't do are mounting tires, balancing prop shafts, and if specialized computer equipment is needed - but on the 911 that is all available via laptop or the massive community. I am on the shoreline of CT and there are scores of 964 owners around with every factory tool/computer I need.
Another thing I can't repair myself on the Porsche is the HVAC head unit and its servos. Those are crucial to daily-ablity and specialists work on these parts for what I consider fair sums - I can probably have the majority of the troublesome components rebuilt for $1k all in.

So I'd like to hear about procedures or problem areas that really try the home-mechanic. Things I've read about are window alignment - I have have done body work but its painful and I really only do it on my long term resto projects not my daily driver. What are other "gotchas" where you can't sweat equity your way out of a big bill or lots of down time? I recall cracking exhaust manifolds on F355s. If something like valve guides were weak I would presume a mind boggling bill to replace all of them - where as all 6 heads on the 964 can be reconditioned by scores of shops for not much more than a grand. I've done internal transmission work on my Alfa but highly doubt I'd do it on a daily driver Ferrari.

Thanks for opinions and experience from self maintaining owners.

You're describing me. I daily drove my 456GT and did most of the maintenance myself. I also have a backdate 911 that I did all the work on. You can PM me if you have specific questions.

    Good Morning Rookie,

It's good to know someone else has a 456 in New England and I too do most of my own maintenance. What year is yours?

I have owned a few air cooled 911's in the past and currently have a 996 and a DB9 in the stable as well.

One of the interesting things about the 456 (as well as most other Ferrari's) is both banks are treated almost like separate engines having separate fuel pumps, ECU's, etc. I find the 456 fairly easy to work on and quite reliable. The only area I can think of that you may want to take a look at is the cooling system. If you're caught in traffic there's a good chance it could over heat. Swapping out the radiator with something more heavy duty usually cures the problem.

Drop me a line using my email if you want to talk more,

    Jack
