I rather doubt that what you espouse will work politically. Ask Van Nuys airport where it has been proven that the noise on the freeways is worse that the airport noise but the Encino residents still complain. Or, Santa Monica airport which is still fighting to stay alive with noise pollution being one of the excuses for closing it.

Yup, they care. The old "sound of freedom" retort does not work in the current political climate.

We had a sonic boom in South Florida recently when a civilian airplane entered restricted airspace around Mar-a-Lago and a USAF fighter went supersonic to intercept. Man, my whole house shook. I didn't know what it was, I thought maybe something hit the roof of my house. Wasn't until the news broadcast the next day that I put it together.

United plans supersonic flights by 2029 - announced a deal to buy 15 supersonic jets
    https://www.cnn.com/2021/06/03/investing/united-supersonic-flights/index.html

hah! yah, right. Seems a little premature. Like when Elon Musk gives a predicted timeline. Double it. Commercial flights will happen, but not by 2029. ;) :p

For ref: Concorde flew at mach 2. Boom jet will fly at mach 1.7

Will Boeing or Airbus be tempted to jump in to this category? o_O

    From above CNN article:
"One of the leaders in that field, Aerion Supersonic, announced last month that it would shut down because of the difficult economics of making a supersonic business jet.
Aboulafia thinks that that the case for developing a supersonic commercial jet is far more difficult than the case for a supersonic business jet."

Despite the facth that i am a huge Boeing fan, i think this and the A380 are the ugliest commercial planes i've ever seen..

Ah, Yes! When I was working there at the time, they called me "THE CHRONIC SNOOZER" . Before that it was, "FOSSIL".

Nice marketing gimmick by UAL. They put that statement out there to get their name in the public eye again (any news is good news). They know that idea will never fly, literally.

yeah, that name could really come back and haunt them. But it seems so obvious. Of course they must have considered it, right?  Hey, the name is catchy and we're going to run with it! :p

It will take too much fuel to make this work. It’s all about the lowest possible cost for the airlines. Also the global warming people will be all over this, not sure there are any companies that are willing to be labeled as gross carbon polluters.

I heard about this. Too bad. Isn't Boom trying to run some kind of e-fuel? Maybe Rolls just couldn't make it work..or didn't want to take the risk.

Or got tired of explaining large quantities of jet fuel required to go that fast.

Well as bad as various entities in the USA are about carbon footprint, environmentalism, and killing off the polar bears,UK and Yurrip in general are far worse.
RR probably decided whatever income could be generated did not outweigh negative publicity, loss of government contracts and the 50,000 environmental protesters in front of headquarters.

Looking at the photos in post #43 the first thing that came to mind was the engine pods will never work. Compare the engine inlets in the middle photo with the Concord or SR-71. Unless they somehow achieved a radical change in shock wave patterns with the fuselage and wing there is no way that inlet was going to provide a secondary shock front to achieve required air velocity inside the ducts. RR could just as likely have bailed because they found the overall concept flawed.
