TW is so weird. Back in Feb I 'won' the lottery and all I got was a bottle of Blanton's. Now they're giving me this because I 'lost' in the spring lottery. So to recap, I lost when I won and I won when I lost. :)

    Cool day today ...

First I went to pick up my consolation Parker's at TW, then my local store had a bottle of Blanton's (not pictured) so I got it to give as a gift, then a good friend dropped by with gifts ... a bottle of WFP which is my favorite bourbon in the world, and a bottle of Old Soul 15. I've been buying and drinking Old Soul 13 any time I can get it and it has become a personal favorite and just about the best $100 bourbon out there for my money. Looking forward to seeing what the 15 will be like.

I also decided to crack open the fancy Belfour rye to see what a hockey goalie can do with whiskey. The short answer is not much. Don't get me wrong, it tastes delicious but there's nothing interesting or special about it. There's nothing to love or hate in it. It would be a nice daily at $60/$70, but for me not worth anywhere near the $250ish it sells for, even with the very pretty bottle. For comparison, the Parker's rye is infinitely better, and also cheeper if you can find it at msrp.

The Hakushu is excellent. It is peated but nuanced. Not heavy.

Cracked open the High West MND act 8 Rye, which the latest one that was released a few months ago.

MND has been hit and miss for me, some have been good, some have been meh, all to date didn't drink up to their price, so much so I that had completely given up on it until someone gifted me this bottle. This one is different, it is reaaaaaly good. Puts that Belfour LE rye to shame. And it actually delivers for the price. Highly recommend this batch if you run into one.

Out of the blue I received an email offering me $3650/bottle for my 23 yo Pappy's. What are current bottles going for on the market. Mine are some of the older ones as per the Archivist at Buffalo Trace email on 09/27/17.

Just curious. I don't need another rifle, but I do have an anniversary coming up..........

    Good morning Dr. Cavallo,

Thank you for reaching out to us! You have a fantastic collection of Pappy bottles. You did some good digging and are very close to the age range!

The labels on your unopened 23 years state that they are bottled in Frankfort, KY. This transition occurred in 2003 on the second release of the Pappy Van Winkle 23 year. In 2005, Pappy 23 year was released with a wax top and an “A” before the number. Prior to this, the Pappy 23 years contained only numerical digits.

This would place your Bottle #267 from 2003 and your Bottle #A319/#A624 from 2005.

I hope that this is helpful. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

    Cheers!

At the time this was the archivist at Buffalo Trace. IIRC I just emailed customer service who forwarded my email.

Welp. Came off a 2 week 7200-mile road trip straight into an 11 day work week, and as I was just sitting down to crack my Woodford Master's batch proof (DELICIOUS btw) I got a text about a local spot with OWA.

So I set the nearly untouched woodford aside to oxidize a little, and did a little retail therapy. :D

Please pardon the awful lighting, it's raining at dusk. ;)

And along with the 107 I grabbed one of their single barrel Trace picks.

Aaaaaaand Mrs works just down the road from the store in question and stopped to see if they had any of her favorite rum (Bumbu, the clear bottle not the black one) in. She said "hey you like the red label Weller right? Grabbed you one on the way home."

Soooooo spose I got 2 unopened ones now. :D

Spending a few weeks out west ...

Finally got around to trying this. I had conflicting expectations, as in it has been so hyped up that my expectations were high and therefore I ended up expecting disappointment. So double reverse expectations. Schizophrenia aside, I like it. :)

Then a little scotch the next day as change of pace.

I like all three of the (relatively easy to find) bottles offered by Smoke Wagon. The straight is awesome for a pool day or similar, small batch is fantastic with a prime steak, and the uncut unfiltered is a high proof campfire sipper. Haven't tried the Private Barrel yet but I'm always keen to grab one.

I'm an aging man of war, close to retirement....and figure that the ol' Colonel was also a man of war at one time. So it seemed appropes to use the Colonel to make a Manowar. :D

The eagle-eyed will note that the peppers in the galvanized planter are comin in nicely. Should be some epic venison chili this fall. Assuming I'm savvy enough to harvest, of course.
