so that ticking sound on start up has gotten worse and i now realize that i must have the dreaded cracked headers. i have tried to read up on the numerous threads on this subject, and have kind of narrowed down my replacement options. but the question i have is how long i can leave it be? does it become potentially fatal very quickly or is this largely unpredictable given that we cannot know if some piece of metal is loose and will get sucked into the piston?
If not my daily driver— I would only put miles necessary to drive to your place of repair. A trusted shop or your home garage lift. the consequences of failure can be significant.
if i didnt have capristo i wld try kline headers, if they make them for the 430 actually now that i think of it richardCH might have a set for sale
I wouldn't drive it. The crack can be letting in air. Add oxygen to a furnace and it gets hotter. Too hot = pre-cat failure and bits can get sucked in. I changed my cracked headers before the ticking even started. By the time they are ticking they are pretty bad.
I have capristo on mine, they work fine. Be sure to keep off the accelerator when you start it up, the tone on start will drop after a couple of minutes- that way you dont get a code. Start blipping the throttle too early and u get a code
i dont think im missing the point. i never use throttle when starting a fuel injected car but from your comment is sounds like people do, and im trying to understand why they wld?
is there any way to check a header, that has been removed from the car, for any cracks or defects? obviously if you just look at it you might see a crack in the weld, but is there any way to pressurize it, or scan it, or some other method to check it prior to installing it in your car?
https://www.ebay.com/itm/F430-Exhaust-header-testing-tool-/174797501066?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286 move got an old set of mark I I’m going to test.
I bought a test kit this week. Allows you to pressure test the header off the car. Ill try it on an old set of mark i f430 headers this we. im guessing 10-15 psi over 30 min out to be adequate.
