Annoying buzz/rattle from the engine bay which is driving me bloody nuts. So far I've had the following done: Loose exhaust tip sorted LH manifold heat shield tac welded as slightly loose Exhaust brackets checked - all good Stripped bolt in exhaust bracket replaced Twin pipe brackets tightened Engine bay panels taken out and car driven, noise still present Spring attached to exhaust valve for added tension - no joy Noise occurs at 3-3100k, warm or cold. If in sport or race and you accelerate hard from 3k the buzz just overshadows everything and it sounds like it occurs when the valves open. Below 3k nothing. Going out for spirited hoon is just frustrating because all I can hear is the noise, it's just not a clean sound. It's going back to GTO Engineering tomorrow for another look but just wondered if the wise and wonderful of Ferrarichat have any other ideas because I'm all out. The other question I have is can valves be economically replaced or fixed/serviced? Sigh.
Shafts of the valves could be worn and then heat+resonance of the exhaust pressure causes to exacerbate? My suggestion would be to borrow a gopro and then record the event with different areas under surveillance.
Cheers all, what I'd really like to do is find another F430 Spider and compare them side by side. My money's on knackered valves but I have no idea if they can be serviced or replaced, looking on Eurospares it seems as if they are part of the whole tailpipe assembly. Chatting with the tech yesterday (I took him out for a drive and he can definitely hear something, he's just not sure what it is) and the plan is to dismantle the valves as far as he can to see if that removes the problem. If so then at least we know where we are. It's crap really because this noise is really spoiling it for me, I can't unhear it and to me it's just horrible. If it can't be solved I'm not sure I can live with it.
A quick test would be to wrap valve with something that is fire and melt proof and sound deadening ..and see for a very small trip if sound changes etc .. just don't know what to wrap with Sent from my moto g power using Tapatalk
The sound is always there but is much more obvious when the roof is down and the windows are up. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Then you can rule out the soft top mechanism as the source of the fault, so that's good. Then the next question would be, is the noise present even when stationary or only while driving?
Try to disconnect the vacuum lines to the valves and see if that makes a difference. If it does, you will know you are on the right track to address the valves. I concur however that it looks like the shafts aren't really replaceable. You'd have to buy a new middle section. would probably be cheaper to buy an aftermarket exhaust!
Aye, I don't think they're fixable things so it may well be that I have to replace the outer tailpipes. It's still with GTO so fingers crossed...
My exhaust broke apart inside and rattled like yours. I had mine replaced with the OEM sport exhaust. Sent from my SM-N975U using Tapatalk
Hmm, interesting. Not sure it does, if you recorded it and slowed it down maybe but thinking back to when I was a nipper and doing the playing card trick on my bike then no. Not heard from GTO since dropping the car off last week, will try and get an update today.
So the verdict is - it's normal. I've had two different orgs look at it and beyond the most obvious problems listed above that have been fixed there doesn't appear to be anything else amiss. GTO did says that it sounds like a normal 430 and they can be a bit 'raspy' when pressing on and is not unusual on other, more newer models. It's my first Ferrari and I thought I would have a cleaner sound but if the noise I'm hearing is normal then I'll just have to live with it and readjust my ears. Tiny bit disappointed if I'm honest but hey-ho, at least there's nothing I have to shell out £££s on to fix!
My F355 had an exhaust rattle/buzz...it was the muffler box had a broken or cracked baffle inside. Capristo replacement muffler resolved it.
Please post a video. I'm curious because I don't have any rattles normally. Sent from my SM-N975U using Tapatalk
I don’t really have the gear to film it, I’m going to pick the car up tomorrow and have a chat with the workshop manager, see what she says.
