Make the trip. Spend time in the options room. See the colors, leathers, and options for yourself. This is a big investment make informed decisions. After seeing the big picture, when/if you have questions about smaller details and options then come on here and we can all help you a lot better.

I'd definitely start with your nearest dealer. Don't be discouraged by a 12 month wait. Getting exactly what you want is worth it. Now if after going through the options and colors and they still won't make an allocation available for you, I'd definitely start calling around to the dealers that do more volume since they are more likely to get one. Personally, I try to keep local businesses in business so they will be there when you need them, but if they blow me off then too bad for them.
Good luck, and don't forget to enjoy the experience!

Did you not know there is a Ferrari dealer just south of Portland OR? It's called Ron Tonkin Gran Tourismo and it's the first Ferrari dealer in all of North America. Should be only 2 or 3 hours from Bend OR actually. Fairly close to where you are.

Or pay over and get one now if you don't want to wait. Many dealers have available, just start calling around.

Ron Tonkin is a good dealer. That being said, I imagine they may recommend you buy a used 488, new Portofino, or something else “while you wait”. Most dealers are pretty full on F8 orders, and production is likely only about another year. With no purchase history a dealer is probably going to prioritize an existing client with what is getting to be a scare allocation / hot market.

or maybe they think they can get you a car! Only way to find out is asking.
