My 2012 California’s engine light went on and estimated for $6,500??

Anyone experience like mine and want to share since I feel to expensive! I bought my car in March 2021 from a dealer with 2 year extended warranty (new power warranty) but the local dealer told me not covered by my warranty!!

See below from the local dealer: Image Unavailable, Please Login
This is the diagnosis from the check engine light.
My Tech found the issue with your car. The fault is in the secondary air
system for emissions for low air flow. The exhaust manifolds are plugged
from carbon build up in the secondary air ports not allowing air to flow
into the catalytic convertors. His recommendation is to remove the exhaust
manifolds and mechanically clean the ports out allowing the needed airflow.

I'd threaten to complain to Ferrari since you bought the car 4 months ago. New power warranty requires a fairly thorough inspection. Seems like they should have caught this.

If that doesn't work look into putting the $6500 toward a new exhaust system. Might as well get an upgrade out of this

I am afraid the Ferrari of Atlanta will do anything since at that time they
Did not find anything during their inspection before declared my car as CPO and eligible to buy two years extended warranty from Ferrari dealer. I live in Denver amd brought the car to Ferrari of Denver who gave me the quote and told me my warranty does not cover it…. What a waste of money to buy extended warranty ….

below is what to replace exhaust manifolds/headers to replace and pretty cheap ….

I never thought about putting $6,500 towards upgrading the exhaust system complete set new muffler as well…. Hmmm not sure how much the cost will be and what kind of performance muffler/exhaust need to be replaced with? I am pretty new to F car and this is my first one

The New Power warranty covers:"Ignition/Injection systems: Oxygen sensors, secondary air system (secondary air system pump and valves only)"

Couple of things to check ... what is the length of your state's mandatory warranty for emissions parts (if any) -- as the SAI system has to do with supplying air to the catalytic converters so they heat up quicker and work on cold start. The EPA's warranty is 8 years.

Secondly, a problem with the SAI system will generally cause the car to fail an emissions test ... if your state has one. If it doesn't have one the car is likely to be perfectly driveable as the SAI system only functions for the first minute or two and has no effect on how the engine actually runs. It may keep throwing check engine lights at you, however.

The point I'm making is changing the headers will not necessarily fix the problem with a clogged SAI system. This is a common issue with the Porsche 993, where there are small ports in the cylinder heads that carry the air to the converters, those tiny passages in the cylinder heads eventually clog and it's usually a sign of worn valve guides and a lot of extra carbon. On the 993 it's possible to clean the ports with chemicals (and bass strings, of all things). But the real fix is to replace the original valve guides. The problem may or may not lie within the headers themselves, there is a fair amount of piping and valves that could be clogged; if it is the valves they would be covered, in theory.

For this kind of repair, I think you are better off if you can find the right independent who is familiar with the problem and it might be solvable for a lot less than $6500 at the dealer. Il Co-Pilota has posted some techniques for cleaning excess carbon that may or may not be applicable here ...

Does the car drive normally or you have lack of power or you feel something different since you bought it ?

I had this light and the garage just replaced the Evap leak sensor, was cheap to replace and a lot of people had this light when the battery was old. Do you usuall plug the tender ?

It drives normally… I don’t feel different then before the light went off…luckily I found a local independent Ferrari shop repair (Maranello shop) in metro Denver and he quoted a fraction of the dealer… but available only early September which is no problem at all ….

I did plug the tender every night and I replaced with a new battery a month after I bought it ….

You’re absolutely correct it’s just a matter of removing the manifolds amd cleaning that excess carbon built up. Thanks for the info… now since I will get this done at a Local independent Ferrari at 27% of the dealer quote so I need to get some info from this chats what muffler/exhaust need to be upgraded while doing this repair to get a better sounds close to F1?
