Thank you for posting your experience. I’ll add your car to the database of PTU failures.

Sheesh I’m teetering when my CPO runs out next month whether to extend it or not…. It’s like gambling craps in Vegas.

I couldn't have said it better, there are so many stories on here on both sides of the bet. I never purchased the warranty in 8+ years of ownership so feel I cheated the house, but others haven't been so lucky. Such a personal decision. Good luck either way!

I'm in the same position next month. Im 50/50 on extending it. I was just quoted about $8k which I believe includes the annual service. Unfortunately its only for 1 year

what wld be interesting is if you cld ask them what the total cost wld have been if you didnt have the warranty? im curious if prices have come down to earth as usually happens once a 3rd party introduces a solution like GTE has.

id price out current cost to do this at your dealer vs GTE and then decide.
    http://www.gte-engineering.com/ferrari-4rm-ptu-rebuild.html
ive posted the math from a while back as i had done some research.
for GTE its essentially cost of the unit plus about 15 hours of labor from what i recall.
15hrs of labor at 160 an hour is $2,400 so you are talking about a $10k job using GTE rebuilt.
dealer was quoting 30 hours of labor at 250 an hour plus about 23K for the PTU (i think)

I had exactly the same issue in my 2014 FF, it was a PTU failure. Dealer asked me for $40k to replace it, I've found a cheaper option in GTE Engineering, they rebuild mine for a 1/4 of the price the dealer was asking. I've taken my car to them because they know how to take it off the car, rebuild and put it back in the car. I think it's worth it to try.

So GTE engineering is on the East coast in NJ?
What about for those of in SoCal? Any shops fix the PTU failures? Funny as I was Googling, I found GTO Engineering…. Wonder if they’ve addressed the PTU’s.

Thanks Jose, can you tell us when the PTU failed and how many miles your car had on it at the time?

I'm not doing the extended warranty, I already found two very good indy ferrari/italian car shops in Houston

From what I understand the GTE Engineering rebuild uses better materials than if you got a Ferrari dealer replacement/rebuild.

In my head I've allocated 15k$, I'm hoping it'll be half

I know I would not go the dealer route in replacing the PTU, I would go the route of the rebuild method through my indy shops, they charge 155$/hr and 165$/hr for labor as of July 2021

Worst case it's 1k$ to ship the car somewhere 1k$ to ship it back.... still well under dealership rates lol

I'm just not worried, especially at the cost of 5k$/yr to warranty through Ferrari

or through a third party who quoted me a few months ago

    4 Year/72,000 Additional Miles- $13,164.00 @ 250$ deductible

    At least there are options

Yes, they are in NJ. By my knowledge they are the only one in America that rebuild PTUs.

GTO Engineering doesn't rebuild PTUs they work on old Ferraris and my understanding is that they are in England.

My car had around 26k miles, Exoticars USA took the car and they said they will fix the problem, they put a used PTU with 11k miles charging me $20k and this one failed after 2k miles. Then I've taken the car to GTE Engineering and they fixed it for $10k. This was in 2019.

The last time I spoke to Serkan he told me they have an "upgrade with better parts" to make the PTU even more reliable.

for those cars who have had the DTC issue (3rd gear sensor resolved) the GTE solution makes sense over power train. for cars which haven't had either issue you prob best to go powertrain as it wld cover both issues. or just go DCT independant fix and PTU GTE if each happens.

That sucks. Did you ship your car to each shop, or pull the trans? Curious how much a shop would charge to pull and reinstall the parts for those that can’t easily get the car to the repair shops.

Can you share the warranty company and if they have a good reputation on claim payout? Thank you
