I agree, as fast as your car will go. One of the biggest bucket list things I ever did. And to make it even more exciting. Is when the guy ahead of you loops it right in the middle of the S, and parks it sideways. I had one place to got without it being a T bone. All I could do was scream into my helmet, DON'T F.......G MOVE as loud as I could. He didn't. We all lived to race another day.:)

    Dear Tom,

I had a ball! A bit of background for you. In the spring of 1961, I had finished two SCCA driver's schools at Cotati and had run the Georgetown Hillclimb (1st in class, beat previous year course record) and had run the SCCA Stockton races. I signed up for the May Laguna Seca races, but McNamera closed my base and the Navy sent me to Turkey for duty. 54 years later I was finally able to run the course (although the layout was different now). Interestingly enough, the "dreaded" corkscrew was actually pretty easy for me as being in a right hand drive car I could see my right apex. The double apex of Turn Two was a bigger problem as I tried several lines but never was happy there.

That day was really special, the car ran perfectly, my modern brake lining worked really well, and the nut behind the steering wheel did not do anything stupid.

    Best regards,

    Robert

Words can’t describe the joy of driving a beautiful engineered package, the only way is to get behind the wheel and experience it. I was glad to see you were able to do that and run Laguna before moving on. The sound from you racecar as I followed was something that can’t be matched. It’s intoxicating and I tried running straight exhaust on the street for a year, but the wife wasn’t thrilled and I backed off somewhat. I also had a comeback event when I was able to run Sebring after 40+ years. Post 1970 12hr race I was on track with a group for 5 laps in my vet before the state patrol arrived. FCA 200x I was back with the C4 and felt the rush of the moment. Chris got me involved with SCCA in 2000 which made all the difference on track. That was turn 17(last) on track, camped Corvette Corral. Picture with scotty was pre race campsite. Still have the vet.

    Enjoyed hearing your story, Tom

Despite everything, I still love California. But, I only rent by the day.

Image Unavailable, Please Login I stayed at the Monterey Tides hotel right on the beach. I’d recommend its lobby bar just for the view, unbelievable. It also had a restaurant, which also had a great view. I only had breakfast there. I was on my Harley so my other locations were bike oriented.
