Motor Oil for Dino

Ed: Valvoline makes PURE racing oils that they do not recommend for street usage. However, as I stated before, VR1 IS RECOMMNEDED for street cars (primarily due to its higher levels of ZDDP which protect camshafts and valve gear). You have to remember that much of this is driven by the marketing department. There is a segment of the population that are drawn to the "RACING" nomenclature and like to use a product that is "associated" with "racing". Valvoline's research has apparently shown them that calling an oil "racing" leads to more sales.

agree dyke but why does valvoline say “vr1 not recommended for passenger vehicles”?
just read the spec sheet. they do rec for street use. thanks again dyke.

dyke, if using vr1, what interval for oil changes do you rec?

 

Ed: I am in enough trouble already! I think people should use an interval that works for the type of storage, kind and frequency of usage and the size of their wallet. Obviously synthetic oils can go longer than conventional oils. Hard track usage requires more frequent changes (probably before every track event). Climate controlled storage definitely lengthens the time between changes. Short drives will do more damage to oil than hard racing. Don't start the engine and run it for 5 minutes every month or so. it just kills the oil. If you drive the car for 25 minutes after every cold start, the oil will last for a LONG time.

 

dyke, i read that oil stored in original containers only has a shelf life of 4-5 yrs.
in a car, maybe 3-4 yrs under the best conditions?

 

Ed: I don't know about shelf life for stored oil, but 3 years in a car under good conditions, no problem at all. I am much more worried about coolant life than I am about oil life.

 

I switched to EVOO about a year ago.

Dino runs great but, oddly, I always have a craving to fix mussels and have a nice Barolo after each drive.
