Hongkong gasoline is legally 98 RON, no Ethanol, 1% benzene, 0.001% sulphur - basically EURO V - at USD 9.75/gal.

A good angle on a nice-looking Mondial. Are those the original metric wheels? Whatever they are, the car just looks right with them.

No they are not the original metrics. The PO switched them out for US size rims for ease of buying tires. Although I did get the original rims with the car in boxes.

Picked up the 84 Mondi QV Cab from Portland, OR, and made the 2400 mile father-son trip down the scenic coast to LA, then across to Houston.
Car pickup at Avant Garde - everything looked great; happy faces.

Across the Mojave desert without AC and into Vegas

Decided it's too hot for open top driving across NM and TX deserts, so decided to get the AC fixed (did not work since leaving dealership), so stopped off at Brian's Italy Service in Vegas. GREAT customer service starting at the top with Brian, and Mel, Abe "the Guru", Junior, and all the interns.

They discovered the fuse panel problem, which is probably the growing source of panel-related electrical problems.

Decided to press on across the desert plains without AC, using the very early morning hours when it might be cooler to make the run to Albuquerque, Dallas, then down to Houston. Car never overheated, even in 105deg weather.

...until about midnight, on a deserted stretch of road just outside Ft. Worth TX, car suddenly died, gauges quit, etc. After about 30 minutes, car started again and drove fine about 2 miles to next exit hotel. Next morning, again, the car started fine and drove about 5 miles/10 minutes and suddenly quit again.

Decided to minimize the losses and rented a UHaul truck and trailer and brought it home.

Ahh, another damned project car (#7) - no more garage space!
It's time to get a car that is trouble-free, like a brand new minivan, huh.

Great story! Sorry to hear about the challenges! However, it's great to have another Mondial in Texas! We may be reaching enough critical mass for a Texas Mondial meet-up. There are 3 sitting over at Moorespeed right now (including mine) alone.

I'll be putting my 87 cab on a uhaul trailer next week for a northward move. Any clearance problems at all? I cut up some 2x8s for added height just in case I needed them.

Definitely! When you pull the car fully forward, the front lip will just barely clear, but still get over the trailer's front edge. When you cinch the wheels down and bounce the car to simulate the car bouncing while on the trailer, the underside clears fine, so no worries there.
HOWEVER, when taking the car down, the car will have settled so the front lip will now catch when unloading. I used a jack on the ground with a 2ft vertical 2x4 between the jack and a suspension point to just lift the body over the trailer edge. When lifted, you push the car back just enough to clear the trailer edge. But, be ready to stop the from rolling too far back and off the trailer...or at least have a large clear space behind the trailer (ask me how i know...luckily, we had lotsa straight driveway with no obstacles).

I should add, we had no probs rolling from the ground up onto the ramps (your precaution about using 2x8s)

Better to put a mondial/308/328 backwards on a trailer for the weight spread more even.
