What do you think of this?

    https://www.fondazionepirelli.org/en/activities/stories-from-world-of-pirelli/the-pirelli-p7-the-cinturato-from-track-to-road-is-back/

I was under the impression that they fitted the Goodyear Gatorback. Maybe that was just the States?

Any way one thing is fro certain Pirelli are actually making the P7 https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/pirelli-collezione/cinturato-p7.html

Also which was best Goodyear or Pirelli?

By the way i have been told i should be getting the TRX again soon. I hope they will land in my shed next week.

I believe that the Goodyear tires were available on the later 308 QV's globally possibly in line with the F1 team's move from Michelin to Goodyear in the early 80's.

That said the 16" wheels date back to the late 70's as a dealer installed option. There is a lot of information in the archives here indicating that factory installed 16" wheels did not happen until the QV. It appears as though the tire of choice from the dealers for the 16" wheels of period were the Pirelli P7 both in the US as well as the rest of the world. All of the period images I have seen had 16" 308 wheels shod with P7 tires and the Goodyears only appeared on the QV.

If it were up to me I'd buy the Pirelli ahead of the Goodyear any day and a Michelin would always be my first choice.

I think there's a bit licence being used there by Pirelli.

I was under the impression that whilst Ferrari would supply tyres from other manufacturers, they tended to promote tyres from their F1 tyre supplier first where applicable, which would have been Goodyear and Michelin in the 70's.

So they would have supplied Pirelli tyres for the 308 GTB, and therefore been "chosen" by Ferrari, but so would Goodyear and Michelin if they had suitable tyres.

I could be wrong - Maybe others know better.

I think that the P7 tyre cam out at about the same time as Michelin developed their TRX tyres as their stab at ultra low profile tyres. And i think that was before Goodyear were doing it.

My guess is; at this tricky point where Michelin were using the millimetric rims, i'm guessing that Ferrari homologated the Cinturato P7 as an optional tyre on imperial rims on the GTB, i'm guessing Goodyear started making the Gator back a few years later as their low profile tyre, and that is when Ferrari started using them because they were in bed with them for race track usage.

However like i say that is guess work. I don't think Pirelli would have completely made it up. it could just be a very breif period that was soon stomped out by Goodyear.

Personally i'm a big fan of Michelin in general, and im a big fan of the TRX (i will be ordering my first batch for a few months tomorrow, so if anyoine wants them place an order on here https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/classic-car-tyres/ferrari/308.html the full story is it will take a week or 2 to get to you depending on where you are, but they will be fresher than fresh)

However now that there is a proper period tyre for your cars in 16" i am less anti 16" wheels. The P7 will suit your cars perfectly. have you seen how revved up and randy the Countach boys are getting about the P7. https://www.lamborghinichat.com/forum/threads/countach-tires-does-anyone-care.508651/page-19#post-146420926 they love it

I'm by no means a specialist of the carbed cars, but I do believe that the 16' inch wheels appeared, at least in Europe, as a factory option (read: not dealer) for the 308 GTB, with Pirelli tyres, in the autumn of 1977, perhaps at the same time that the so called "sprint pack" (= modified camshafts, etc...)

??? We think that you asked this exact same question in a thread 6 weeks ago: Did the Ferrari 308 fit Pirelli Cinturato P7. This article insinuates it did.

We also think the question was answered in that thread when I posted a picture of my original windshield tire sticker specifying Pirelli P7 16" tires...

Dougal, the official spare parts catalogue lists the Pirelli P7, so in short the answer is yes.

However, it was not the OE from the beginning of series production in 1975, and naturally P7's were only fitted if you selected the 16" wheel option (I think dealer lists mentioned 16" wheels as a factory option from around 1977).
