    Hi,

New to the site here. I have put a deposit on a 1988 Mondial 3.2 Cabriolet in red/tan and am very excited! It has been in a collection and has 9800 miles on it. The seller is arranging for a mechanic to address some issues that were present - it started easily however the gas pedal wasn't responding, the parking brake light was on and the handle wasn't working at all, and the rear windows didn't operate. These things will be sorted out and the sale is contingent on a test drive once the work is complete. The timing belts were changed 2 years ago, so that should be ok for the time being. I plan to work on it myself once it is in my care.

I suppose other things I might do would be to install new plugs and wires, oil change, and check fluids. It hasn't been driven in a couple years, so I expect there to be other issues that will emerge as a result. I plan to drive it regularly to avoid this concern.

I might like to install a set of 17" 360 wheels as well. Not sure about swapping the exhaust yet.

Any advice before completing the purchase would be appreciated.

Looking forward to owning my first Ferrari!!!

    Derek

Congrats! Late 88 with no warning lights panel and ABS. Very nice spec.

Thanks! How can you tell it is ABS? Not sure what the warning light panel is.

Center warning light panel next to the gearshift. It's not in your car (it's a tray) because it wasn't there on the late 88s. (My 88 3.2 coupe is the same way)

And it's also an indication that it's an ABS car. You'll see an "antilock" light in the dash warning lights.

    Looks like an excellent example.

Not sure why the rear windoows wouldn't work at such low milage, probably just the switches which get a slight corrosion on the contacts.

You would want to get new tires and replace the key fuel hoses for safety.

Probably needs small bits cleaned and lubricated. Get some Deoxit and go through all the wiring and fuse box connections.

Get a Fabspeed cat and leave the stock muffler, nice growl without being to loud, many aftermarket exhausts have resonnance.

Hill Engineering has an steering wheel spacer, most have the steering on full telescopic extension, but need a bit more reach in order to have the pedal and shifter placement correct - of course this ergonomic matter depends on how the car fits you.

I am the second owner of my 88 Mondial 3.2 cab for about 15 years now, and enjoy working on the car to keep it in a perfect state. Good well kept Mondials are getting rare!

I love the 3.2 Mondials. What a car. I am a fan of the center warning light panel because of the Italian tags. Wish the 8's had gauges that read: acqua, benzina, press olio! Congrats on the purchase, and thanks for the post.

Welcome to the brotherhood! You might try cycling the rear window switches, meaning up-down, up-down about 200 times.........seriously. Sit there and push the buttons back and forth for 5 minutes. Over the years corrosion builds up in the contact area and when you push the button electrical current will not pass through. Similar to a flashlight with corroded batteries. I did this with my glovebox switch and it works now. Everytime I drive my 3.2 I cycle all the switches..

On another note, What size rims do you have? Early 3.2 had a metric size rim and later in the series there was an option for a 16" rim that fits standard US tires. I have the 360 modena rims on my 86-3.2 and would be interested in swapping rims with you. I can send pics on a private message if needed. Glad you are with us.

Looks like mine, congratulations. Yes, definitely flush all of the fluids and the brake fluids. Check for any leaks and torn) deteriorated boots. Take a look on how to operate the roof, first time I did it I thought the bows were bent/broke...you have to flip/lift up first then back. There is a good YouTube video on the operating the roof. On the rear window, also try and guide/pull it up by hand when you push the up button. My rear windows go really slow and I help them by pulling up when I press the button. I read it's a PIA to service the rear windows due to the paneling but can be done...try the switches first. Remember to let the car warm up before driving and shifting into second. I usually skip second until the engine is warmed up. Good luck and keep us posted.

Oh, another thing...be careful driving over those traffic humps and humps in parking lots. The front spoiler is rather low.

Mileage generally isn't the problem on those rear windows. It's the 30+ year old grease the factory used on the mechanisms that has turned into sticky/solid glue at this point. If cleaning the switches doesn't work, you can remove the assemblies, clean everything up and relube and generally have success. It was one of the first things I did to my 1987 when I bought it a couple of years ago. You don't want to cook the motors, since they are very hard to come by.

Thanks for the words of wisdom and warm welcome!

If I go for a set of 360 wheels, then the tires would be fresh. I read they are 18" not 17", which would change the ride quality which I am ok with. I'll hang onto the stock 16" wheels. Someone has a set of the 360 starfish wheels available in Toronto which would be handy.

So new coolant, brake fluid, power steering, clutch? New rubber fuel supply lines?

Good to know about the switches for the windows. I have already experienced the slow rise of the front windows and helped pull them up by hand.

I read elsewhere that the relays and fuses are prone to corrosion so will look at cleaning them up.

Oh and what products are recommended to take care of the leather for the seats?

Many use Leatherique. There is a rejuventor oil you let soak in for a day, and then a second product pristine clean that you wipe things up with. Will not leave a greasy/glossy look. Make sure you test on a small area, some cars have their leather redyed (really resprayed) and it looks so good people think its original, but some products will remove the redye and make a mess of things.

I have also used a product called Clapham's Beewax Leather Dressing, gives a bit of waterproofing which for a convertible caught out in the rain from time to to time can be helpful to avoid leather staining. Leaves a bit more a glossy sheen.

There is no power steering, only the later T model has that.

Clean all electrical connections, relays with Deoxit. This is usesd by some of the lux car manufacturers at the factory, and on aircraft, really solves for many electrical issues. https://caig.com/deoxit-d-series/

Also, when you bleed the brakes, the clutch is hydraulic and connected to the same system. You can bleed the clutch slave as well. Probably should inspect the clutch slave for signs of internal seal leaks, the hose that goes to it can also perish as it is close the the exhaust header heat.

Thanks - I can take a trip down to Niagara on the Lake then to pick some up.

I've used Clapham's Beeswax salad bowl finish on woodworking projects like cutting boards, I'll check out the Leather Dressing.

The leather recommendation is dependent on whether your seats have been painted or stained. I looked at a 3.2 once that had a dye treatment done on the seats and it looked horrible. It had a painted glossy fake barbi doll look to it. No leather treatment will penetrate that and it is a waste of your time. My simple treatment of Lexal leather treatment has given my 3.2 wonderful results. The primary ingredient you are looking for is mink oil.

Oh yeah, the mink oil gives your car the most delightful leather shop smell. Sometimes I just go down to the garage to sit in the Ferrari.........just to take in the scent

Welcome to the club! I have enjoyed mine (same year, ABS, no warning light panel in the center console) immensely for the past year. Personally, I would take off the aftermarket fender shields. Mine looked exactly like yours and turns out they were magnetic so super easy to remove.

    Many miles and smiles!

    Nice looking car Derek congratulations.
I have a 1988 3.2 Coupe in the same colours in Sydney, Australia.
My advice is keep it original. Whenever you can go back to original.
Keep those original wheels and if they are 390mm get TRX when you need new tyres.
Replace all water hoses - this is essential - (including heater when you can) and rubber fuel lines.
Filters and all fluids inc brake fluid.
Check cooling system, fan operation, thermostat.
A good mechanic can do most things however you will at some stage need a Ferrari specialist.
Once you are good to go take it to 7000rpm every opportunity. They are built for it. Image Unavailable, Please Login
