Normally I'm quite against the re-naming of things and a part of me struggles with this but most of me smiles inside. The famed Curva Parabolica at Monza is set to be re-named Curva Alboreto this weekend https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/monza-renames-parabolica-in-honour-of-michele-alboreto/6656208/
Agreed. Also, I'm very pleased to announce that starting tomorrow I will be renaming my driveway at home Bottas Straight.
I must say I'm torn. I REALLY like Alboreto and the tribute but there is a whole lot of history in Parabolica that should also stay. My heart is divided.
Well, indeed Parabolica was descriptive of geometry, as an adjective. But as Michele was a brave Ferrari F1 piloti, a likable character. and died pancaked under an upside down LeMans Mercedes, I'm going to throw a vote in this Thread the other way. BigTex approves this Tribute!!!
I never understood the hype over Parabolica.... It doesn't test any special driver's skill, it's just a long hairpin. I drove there in a BMW M2 and was driven in a Pagani Huayra with Davide Testi on the steering wheel and other than being a long corner, it has nothing special.
Parabolica is an iconic corner and much more challenging than it looks. Carrying big speed into it is very tricky and a strong exit is essential to get a good run down the main straight and into the first chicane which is a critical passing zone. A really quick car is right on the limit there as evidenced by Lecerc last year who brought out the red flags with his off.
Parabolica for me. Some things need to stay as they are. It's tradition. I like Alboreto but maybe somewhere else.
My thoughts align with Mario's. An Alboreto tribute is warranted - and that mural is nice -- but I'd prefer they keep Parabolica.
Well the real question is if the name Parabolica isn't being used, where can we reassign it? Hmmm, perhaps in NASCAR somewhere, just to hear Dale Earnhardt announce, "And there goes Kurt Busch high into Parabolica with an easy pass of Bubba Wallace"
ok, Audi I think is correct without checking my scrapbook.. The ramp up to the roof my apartment garage is now known as Eau Rouge
I think the contrary, it looks very mundane. I have watched a F1 race from there, a few F2/F3 races, and many GT races including the WEC Prologue a few years ago, and I don't understand the hype. Obviously in a F1 with 1000hp an 750kg it should be very challenging, but with 790hp and 1250kg it was not: https://streamable.com/i1w5z3 There are so many other corners which are more challenging and interesting: Eau Rouge, Suzuka Ss, Interlagos mergulho, etc.
The saddest thing is that the Parabolica name is so iconic that people will continue to call it like that and poor Alboreto will stay without corner. I think there are plenty of other corners, straights and tracks around Italy to rename better than the Parabolica.
