I get that I should mark the hinges and undo the four bolts, but I’d love some tips on HOW to do that, and then on HOW to safely lift the thing away.

Is two people enough to do it safely?

I have always done it with two people, marked the hinges on the frame side, and left hinges attached to bonnet. It is not very heavy.

Each person undoing bolts with one hand and holding the lid (which is at a steep angle) with the other? Just want to be sure I understand.

What’s the best way to remove the struts?

Are you removing it for the alternator belt?

My car threw its belt recently. I bought a similar belt at a local auto parts store and removed the grill assembly by the glass. Is yours already off?

No, I haven’t started yet. You saying I can do this with the engine cover in place? I can see that removing the narrow grill cover would reveal the alternator, but I have my doubts about being able to get my hands on it without removing the lid.

You can do it without removing the deck. I tried to do it without removing the narrow grill but I couldn't get the leverage I needed. If you can reach the bolt holding the tension assembly for the alternator --you'll be able to reach the pivot bolt. Give it a shot. It will make you feel far more comfortable if the car throws its belt in the middle of nowhere.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll try it.

The car DID throw its belt in the middle of nowhere!

Where do you situate your body while you do this? Do you have a platform like @vincenzo ?

I have a lift. Any chance this is easier from underneath?

to put the belt om the crankshaft it is better from underneath, but to adjust the tension you have to go from the top

Most of the work I leaned over the fender. Just stretch before and while doing this type of work.

I used Vincenzo technique for addressing tasks for my major service. I used movers blankets and a small section of plywood. I got rid of that stuff since.

Definitely use the lift for installing the belt over the crank pulley.

The tightest part of my car throwing its belts was the smog pump tension assembly. You need to snake your arm from the oil filter up and behind to the cam cover.

Nice, can you cover that panel in padding and rosso corso dyed leather?
