Torque specs in WSM: for dry or lightly oiled fasteners?

    Couldn't find this in my 1983 BBi WSM or searching forums here. Installing cylinder heads. Should I clean head studs and nuts and very lightly coat with motor oil before installing or assemble dry? I know it makes a big difference in clamping force. What is the consensus here?

    I don’t recall seeing it stated in the WSM one way or the other. In most all engineering documents, torque is assumed as clean and dry unless specified differently. In fact, most owners manuals clearly state clean and dry when quoting lug nut torque for the average laymen.

    When galling is an issue, most eng docs spec out the recommended lubricant as well as the torque. Antiseize is a lubricant too!

    If you see it in the TR WSM, please point it out. It is a good question.

    Would this be of concern for even routine oil changes? I torque my drain plugs to a specific value, but I don't bother removing oil from the threads. TIA.

    It is doubtful anybody cleans the oil off those threads. I use safety wire on those plugs and ‘barely’ hit the torque spec.
