    Hey all,

Wanted to get the forums thoughts. I heard a loud rattling sound from my muffler area, pulled it last night and discovered both inlets of the Tubi Style muffler are cracked pretty badly.

Seems like a common issue. I can have it repaired, but I'm sure it will crack again,

Do you think it would make sense to just swap back to an OEM muffler? It seems like the tips have to be replaced to OEM, correct?

The car also has Tubi headers and high flow cats, so I'm hoping everything lines up with the OEM parts.

Any other thoughts or ideas let me know!

Get it re welded and see when you refit it see if it is stressed- are you putting strain on the weld when you bolt it up. Fit a spacer on a bracket if you need to. The pic of the old one looks as if it has been pulled, ie stressed

I read some other threads that said these crack pretty often, I just didn't want to have to take all the time to get this back apart if it cracks again, but if you all think a weld will hold then I will give it a try!

You can always get the welder to fit a couple of gusset plates at right angles to give it extra strength

Got this quotes to weld by 2 places today. 1st place said they couldn’t weld it without a jig to hold the inlets in place otherwise it could not line up after.

2nd place said they don’t need a jig and would fill it with argon, and it would cost $700-$800.

My switch to OEM thought is looking a lot better. Does anyone know if the aftermarket Tubi headers and cat pipes will line up with the inlet of the OEM muffler? I know I will have to get OEM tips as well.

You might see if there is a welding school in your area. They might enjoy working on a Ferrari part for free.

I’m a half ass mig welder… I would try it myself b4 dropping 800+tax to those boys,

    that should be repairable

Might be a good time to build an f430 cs copy exhaust. They sound superb!

Your quote for 800 is high yes that is getting back purged with argon and when you do SS welding that is the correct way. But that is a 300 $ job.

1st shop just doesn't want that job.

2nd shop just wants your money.

If this was my problem, I'd spring for a MIG welder and a pile of stainless tubing to practice on and then do it myself.

I'd have a mig welder already except I can't justify it quite yet.

East- exactly what I did… I was getting quotes to weld some simple subframe plates into my e36 project…. People wanted $1k to look at it.

I learned to weld on my e36 chassis… tig upside down on my back…. I pivoted to mig now w better results.

I would not weld SS with a mig. Yes you can but tig is much better and the correct one way. I did my cs exhaust that had a crack and fixed these myself.

    Nice work clean!

my first useful thing w my welding machine was fixing a cheap bearing puller tool that broke on 1st use.

highly rec buying a machine and getting a level of prowess. Fixed outdoor oven, lawn mower deck, tools, car chassis, car hood hinge mounts, exhaust fab, made wife an over built pencil holder which can double a blunt weapon.
