Bit of a plumbing issue going on with my 1980 308 GTSi. some PO converted to a dual fuel filter set-up, resulting in a modified pipe from the top of the filter over to the distributor. Also a plastic "hose" from the bottom of the filter T to the accumulator. I'm trying to put this back to stock, but finding it difficult to get right fuel pipes, or the right ends to make my own. Looking for the pipe off the top of the filter, and the one off the bottom of the filter or a source for custom pipes that can do the right fittings.
You may be misleading yourself if you are looking at the available online 308i SPC -- that's for a euro version 308i. 1980 US version 308i did/do have dual fuel filters -- see page 67 in your 186/80 OM: Image Unavailable, Please Login Unfortunately, I don't have a copy of the 1980 US 308i SPC. For 1981-82 US 308i, they changed to the single fuel filter layout -- I do have a copy of that SPC so let me know if you'd like a copy for the part numbers (but they are probably unobtanium). If you've damaged something, your best option may be to talk to Verell at www.unobtaniumsupply.com as he may be able to provide the fittings and Cohline tubing to change over to a single fuel filter configuration or repair/replace something that has been damaged.
Walt, your 1980 has the dual set-up? Do you have the SPC for the 1980? My car is a 1980 with fuel injection but the SPC binder that came with it is for 1981/82. The online catalogs match my binder so I haven't seen the diagram for dual filters anywhere. One T pipe is bent ( I did that ), and the hose from the bottom to the accumulator is hard plastic and has a bend (seam) in it. Definitely need to replace that. If you have the SPC for 1980 could you share that page or give me part numbers for the T and lower fuel hose?
Thanks for the reply Steve, I've also got the 81-82 parts binder. I just assumed this was a modification by a PO because it doesn't match the diagram. I'll contact Verell. Good idea. -Keegan
does your parts book show it as dual? Would you have the part numbers for the T pipe that connects the filters together and the lower hose from the filters to the accumulator?
That's interesting, but maybe the switchover didn't exactly correspond to model year. Documentation for '81/'82 US 308i (showing the single fuel filter) would probably have been written in late '81 so may not reflect very early '81 US cars -- does your 1981 have a very early build date (like mid-late 1980)?
Mine is July 1980. I spoke with Kevin at Algar and he let me know the online parts catalogs are all the "most updated" version. He had a the earlier diagram with the dual filters (attached). I got a new bottom line coming from UK and I found a union pipe on eBay. The bottom line is black plastic... I don't love that but as long as it is new and not creased I'll run it. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
More dates of manufacture please if you have a 1981 US 308i with the dual fuel filters. The OM structure maybe does indicate that the 1980 US to 1981 US transition was a little mushy: There's a complete dedicated OM specifically labeled for 1980 US 308i. Then there's a short "addendum" style OM supplement for 1981 US 308i that just describes the OM things that were changed in 1981 vs 1980 (so if you had a 1981 they'd give you a copy of the 1980 OM and a copy of this 1981 addendum OM). And later there's a complete dedicated OM specifically labeled for 1981/1982 US 308i.
