The final carpet piece you mention looks like the piece that is on the left side of the passenger footwell. The shape doesn’t look quite right in certain spots. That panel can be removed with the chocolate brown triangular shaped leather covered piece. I can’t really see from the photo if you have already replaced that section of carpet from the photo.
The carpet looks very nice though. Great job.

So as Steve Magnussun explained the Hand Brake Switch is pretty simple. To access it you would need the side console for the handbrake removed / loose so that you can move it out of the way. The switch is a plunger type setup and has the one wire attached to it. When the Hand Brake is not on the plunger is resting against part of the hand brake and the plunger is pushed up and it breaks contact with its base. In my pictures you can see the brown part of the internal plunger rod which is breaking contact. Once you pull up on the hand brake lever it moves the contact under the switch and the switch is fully open. The switch is basically the same as the refrigerator Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login door switch, once you open the door the button comes out and basically makes contact and when you close the door the button is depressed. The hand brake works the same way with no brake on the button is depressed and when you put the brake on it makes contact and the light is on. Here are a couple of pictures for you. My fix by the way was to flip the bracket so that my plunger made the correct contact with the lever. No money just some slight brain power and I do mean slight!!!!!

Thanks for the feedback and photos -- seems like it was about the same amount of work to tape up the wire or just fix the real problem ;).

So, this is where I stop today....It is hump day so I will meet a few friends have 2 beers and home I am... Pretty much have everything done that I wanted to do other than put the drivers side speaker enclosure in and then reassemble the door panels and put them back in. It seems like when you take something this old apart....when it goes back together it is just a bit off. I definitely feel like I know a bit more about the interior. Will be a cleaner and less smelly driver car now.

I appreciate it and was trying to look at other cars online and also the parts diagrams etc. but just cant really seam to figure it out. It looks like they show it in the upper passenger side footwell, but who knows. I bought the carpet on Ebay about a year ago and it came from Germany. It was a wool, which was and is pretty stiff, so bending it and gluing it in place was a bit harder than if it was a softer more flexible type. During the process I got my radio working, which never did, the wires were cut and worn under the passenger side footwell where I think mousey was living at one time, so I repaired that. I also removed a 25 year old Viper alarm, which slowed me down a bit and then did finally get the parking brake light working correctly, (Thanks to Steve Magnusson) for the input on it. It was relatively simple as he said.

Steve, I could not get the hand brake adjusted to make the light work correctly until I flipped the bracket that the plunger screws in to. Once I did that it lowered the plunger and I had enough adjustability that I could get it to function properly. It was just a bit of trial and error for me, but overall not to difficult.

Maybe an indication that it was previously mis-assembled by someone, and they unplugged the wire because the light was always "on" -- just a thought (but not a good design if it can be mis-assembled)...

I feel pretty good about most of my fixes. I have done quite a bit of work to the car....with Ferrari Chat help of you and others. If you are a guy or gal who has done brakes and tune ups over the years and oil changes etc. then try and do some stuff. You will know when you are over you head. Has made me a bit smarter and less scared. There is a sense of accomplishment as I am not of course a professional mechanic or upholsterer, but not that I see the light at the end of the tunnel it is a great rush.......not to mention the beer I traditionally have at the end of the day. Hopefully will finish up today the rest of the interior install.

So, here are some do's and don'ts with this project.

    Do's and Don'ts
    1. Bring out a box of sandwich baggies that will seal and right on them with a Black Sharpie where each set of screws and bolts were taken from. Be specific, Drivers side.....Passenger side etc.
    2. Before starting take multiple pictures of everything from every angle you can for reference.
    3. If it is a carpet install you are doing you will find approximately 1/2 inch closed cell black foam under the carpet and if it does not smell from mold and mice etc. leave it in.
    4. I suggest laying out the new carpet in a part of the basement that is heated and flat so that it will help get any folds or kinks out of the carpet.
    5. I had used less than 2 cans of the 3m headliner adhesive for sections of the carpet that are glued in, such as the rear shelf and also the side carpet by the doors.
    6. I also bought new Velcro from Home Depot, I think it was approximately 1 1/2 inches wide. The front floor pieces of carpet are held in place basically with Velcro strips that are riveted to the floor frame. Mine were tattered and were replaced.
    7. Prior to gluing in the side pieces of carpet by the doors and speakers I dry fitted it as it does have velcro built in to it for the floor carpet to attach and I wanted to make sure of the alignment of it prior to gluing it down.
    8. The side pieces have loose leather or fake leather trim that actually lays loose under the door moldings. I accidentally put new door mouldings on prior to the side carpet install. It actually worked out OK as I just pried it back up and reinstalled it in that area.
    9. Speaking of rubber door moldings, I couldn't find reasonable replacement moldings so I measured the moldings and saw how it was affixed and took a chance and bought some on EBay. I made sure I had plenty for mistakes. My replacement rubber molding do not have the fuzziness on the inside of the moldings, but other than that I am very happy with them so far.
    10. I did cheat a bit and when I removed the speaker enclosures and the small panels by the console. The replacement carpet set I bought did not have the leather sown in for the speakers, so I took a thread ripper (From our sewing kit) and ripped out all the threads and I took it to a guy I know that is an upholsterer. I just asked him to sew it in but decided to let him sew it in and glue it down on the speaker enclosures. Then I decided I would also let him glue the carpet on those side pieces by the console. That was actually a good decision and if you have someone I would suggest it.
    11. Seat removal was done they are Allen head bolts 1.25mm by 20mm long I believe, so be careful they probably haven't been removed in a long time.
    12. My carpet set did not could with one or two pieces, like the side panels on the doors were not part of it. They are faded a bit and could be re-dyed to match better I guess.
    13. Speaking of interior trim I did re-dye a bit of it. I had some dye color matched to the brown of the dash and the doors and also of the new trim on the carpet. I used Leatherique and am no expert but pretty happy with the product. I did it in an unfinished part of my basement with gloves on etc. as you cant help but make a slight mess.
    14. The issues with re-dying some interior pieces is where to stop. That is the hardest decision unless you pull the entire interior. I did not pull the entire interior trim, which if it was a full restoration I would have, but my car is a driver with many ........lets say issues.
    15. You will find things expected and unexpected, as I did. I knew it was there, but removed a 25 year old Viper alarm system that was not being used and also a very old stereo amp under the passenger footwell.
    16. A mouse or mice had made a home at one point in the passenger footwell way deep in there and had chewed at some wires for the amp etc. Yes the power wires and others , so I deleted the amp and repaired the wires etc. The alarm system was carefully removed as it was wired into the starter circuit and so before deleting I found the schematics for it online. I also tested it by just unplugging the wiring harness to it to see if it affected the starting of the car.....It did, so I surgically removed it.
    17. I forgot to say....Don't Panic at this point.......It might feel like you are in over your head, but......
    18. Also you need some room, so a small garage might not work while you are working, so I moved my car out in the driveway so I could have the doors wide open etc. I kept the trickle charger on the battery as I was working cause of the interior lights being on.
    19. Since you removed the seats you will need to lay the drivers seat in the car each time you take the car out of the garage....PITA but it is what I did. It just lays there, but it is heavy but manageable by one person.
    20. I also got my stereo working for the 1st time ever. I was going to upgrade it, but just decided to use the one that was in it and use the same speakers. They weren't blown and I don't think you are ever going to have a killer system in it, but now is the chance to upgrade speakers etc. I think they were 6 1/2 inch. If you replace them make sure that the new ones don't have a protruding tweeter if you have the leather in the speaker panels as it will interfere.
    21. I re-dyed my door panels in my basement and took them apart so that it was a better job being done. There are about 10 or so really small screws with washers that go through a sheet of thick but brittle plastic and screw into the armrest. You will find that #6 screws will work with a little pressure to start. I used a multitude of flat washers that were larger where the plastics was cracked etc.
    22. Speaking of the armrests the black insert in the armrest just pry's out and the ash tray also pops out. The door lock knob does not screw on it pulls off with some force. The metal that slides up in it has some barbs or teeth like a fish hook and that is how it is held in place. Dont loose them. Also there is a small light that illuminates the ash tray. Unplug the light if you need to to make it easier.
    23. The door handle mechanism basically unsnaps and pulls out. It had a green snap that snaps over the rod which you just push off and the rod then comes out. I would not touch the adjustments if the door handle was working properly.
    24. When the door panel has been removed and you are putting the car back in the garage and the seat is sitting there you need to open the door????? You will see at the bottom the mechanism that the rod attached to. Just push it forward and the door will open.

Hopefully this helps bit and I can and will amend this as I remember some more helpful hints.

Great job and great writeup. I’ll tag this one for future ref!

BTW - old chips from defunct casinos bring some high dollars from collectors here in Nevada. Do a bit of research before assuming it has no value.

    Thanks Vincenzo.

I read your stuff on here all the time. Me and my wife Love Vegas........except recently when our Southwest flight was changed flying back from an anniversary trip to Cali. It was supposed to go through Denver, but they changed it to Vegas as a connection. Not terrible, but it was a later flight....the last one to Baltimore (I live outside of Baltimore) and what we had on the flight was typical Baltimore. There was almost a fight with people in wheelchairs over early boarding on the plane and we hadn't even left yet!!!!!

I was expecting to find........some....... well you know.........white powder under the seats next to the chip!!!!! Is that blasphemous to say????
