2001 550 Engine out service performed
When engine replaced it ran fine and went 1 mile to alignment shop After alignment it started and drove partially back to shop and went to 6 cylinders (or some other very poor performance)
When back at shop and turned off
It did not start again at all

any ideas of where to look would be appreciated
    Thx

Who did an "engine out" service on a 550? I am not aware of any routine 550 services that require the engine to come out. Sounds like the shop needs to get busy and figure out what they did wrong.

Give a small shot of starting fluid. If it fires you know you have spark and lack fuel.Look in an organized manner. There is always a reason. Good luck and please keep us posted. Mike

Check your grounds, check spark, check fuel.

Does it have a healthy crank? Were there any warning lights when you started to lose power? e.g. battery or engine check lights?

Has this “shop” done an engine out on a Ferrari 550 before? Do they have any Ferrari diagnostic tools?

I had a 550 too and had the same issues (without removing the Engine ). Here is what I suggest. a. Have someone crank the engine and open the fuel injector rail caps with a tyre type valve. Press the pin on either side and see if fuel is squirted out at significant pressure. If not , chances are your fuel pump has gunk in it and you are better off removing the fuel tank and scrubbing it with new pumps. I have pictures of how mine looked before and after as my car was left unused for a while. If fuel pressure on rails is fine, your issue is one of the 3. a. HT coil / cables, b. Exhaust ECU (the green one that is also used in the 355 and 360) These go bad with age and if not working will make car go into limp mode for that section. c. Lambda sensors (before and after) These should be replaced every few years anyway. The main ECU seldom fails. Its the exhaust related electronics that suppress the car from running usually. Incidentally my car never went over 2500 RPM and still had no Check Engine lights on. I sold it to san investor who was doing a major upgrade to give it a high end restoration and wait for its value to shoot up as it was a Manual in Right Hand Drive. He replaced many parts like all HT cables, HT coils, Fuel lines, exhaust headers, cats, sensors.

I'm assuming the car ran reasonably well before the service. Why would this problem appear after an engine out? Did the tech find any contamination in the fuel filters?

Would a single coil pack stop the engine starting?

The car wouldn't start. Why would one, then two exhaust temperature ECU's go bad shutting down both banks. Was there a slow down warning? Were there intermittent SD warnings prior to the service?

Were there any problems before the service? How long did the service take?

If the car was out of use for a long time, the pumps can die. If only one bank is bad for any electric issue, the car would still start but run very rough. If its not starting at all, its an issue of a common electrical part like a alarm/ main ecu etc.

The 550 has two engine ECUs. I assume the Right ECU gets an OK signal from the immobiliser and the Right ECU sends the OK signal to the Left ECU (similar to the 360). The immobiliser also sends a separate signal to the start relay. Again, is the engine cranking?

Would an immobiliser make a car run badly (or run on 6 cylinders) after the car had done half a trip? Again, were there any problems prior to the engine out service? Why was an engine out service performed?

Without some feedback from the OP, diagnosis is next to impossible.

I would want to make sure I took it back to the tech who thought he had to pull the engine. Unless, of course, an overhaul was required.

    Let's start from the beginning.

What was the reason for engine removal.

How was the car running prior to the service being performed.

Was anything in the harness tampered with or changed during the service?
