Reported in Autoweek, possibly 2016, likely 2017.

Failed twice before, a bit close to Austin.

Just noticed another thread, but I can not successfully delete.

I think Austin was to draw from Mexico and south American sin city will draw international and media types . And other good thing is lots of rooms indy was killed because the 2005 tire deal and hotels were killing east and west us f1 fans . Another thing that hurt indy they lost there late year date and it horrible to go to indy in late June hot and humid .

Las Vegas F1 race likely to get spring slot alongside Miami, says COTA chairman

A third US Formula 1 race in Las Vegas is likely to be twinned with the series’ new round in Miami, according Circuit of the Americas chairman Bobby Epstein.

The 2022 F1 calendar will feature two American races as the series holds its first Miami Grand Prix in May. However commercial rights holder Liberty Media is known to favour holding more races in the USA and Las Vegas is considered a likely target.
F1 previously held three races in America in 1982, when the series visited Long Beach, Detroit and Las Vegas. However that proved the second and final race for the latter venue, Long Beach was gone after one further event, and within 10 years F1 had left the USA entirely.

However Epstein believes the sport’s growing popularity in the USA under Liberty Media makes three races in the country a viable option.

“I think 10 years ago it would have been hard for F1 to support two events,” Epstein told RaceFans in an exclusive interview. “How many [F1] fans are there in the US? Currently there’s certainly enough to support three.

“I hope that keeps growing. I think the Netflix series helped it grow a lot. I think an American driver, especially a winning American driver, would make it possible to have six or eight Formula 1 events, which I don’t see happening given the calendar and the bidding wars that happen for these races.”

The US GP takes place towards the end of the year and is followed closely by a race in neighbouring Mexico. Epstein believes a race in Las Vegas would take place nearer to Miami’s round to reduce travel costs.

“I certainly can see Miami and Vegas being paired in a nice spring slot on the calendar and then Austin and Mexico City in the fall,” he said. “I think together it makes sense from a business standpoint of transferring the cargo to make it two stops when you come over to the continent, at least.

“For us, I think it makes a great opportunity to bring the cars and get exposure in the US more than once a year.”

Las Vegas held the F1 season finale in 1981 and 1982 in a car park at the Caesar’s Palace casino. The track was later used by the CART IndyCar series before the site was built upon.

Red Bull visited Las Vegas for a demonstration run with one of its F1 cars in 2018 (pictured).

Nevada governor confirms Las Vegas F1 GP talks

    Image Unavailable, Please Login

Oct.23 - The governor of Nevada has confirmed that Formula 1 may be heading to Las Vegas.

With Miami joining the schedule next year, it would be the third grand prix in the United States - as Austin looks set to extend its US GP contract beyond this weekend's race.

"Anything that would stop the momentum of that would be potentially irreversibly detrimental," Bobby Epstein, boss of Austin's US GP, told the New York Times.

"Given that we start with that as a point of agreement, I'm fairly optimistic this will continue for a long time."

He also said he has no problem with Miami joining the calendar next year for a second race in the critical United States market.

"There is absolutely room for both," said Epstein.

There may also be room for a third US race, with a delegation from Las Vegas in Austin this week for talks with Formula 1 about a 2023 event.

"I've had the opportunity to meet recently with F1 leaders and I've appreciated their time on this topic," revealed Nevada governor Steve Sisolak.

"I've said it before and I'll say it again - the silver state is quickly becoming the entertainment as well as the sports capital."

from "we don't need America" to 3 rounds in America...gee it's like the commercial rights were bought by an American investment group or something :)

IF it all goes through, they better make sure this is done properly. It must be on the strip IMO. A night race to show off the lights of Vegas. Don't make it another Miami race set in the parking lot of a football team.

No you must understand Liberty cheap cost make most profit formula - Street circuit, responsibility of promoter, approved by FIA for 30+ mil hosting fee that showcases city over competition. Liberty does not care as its got more interest that it can handle. They make money on fee's not competition on the track lol

Well a street race certainly has more showmanship on a global stage. I just can't imagine that they would do that in downtown Las Vegas for reasons many have mentioned here already. Who knows. We'll see. Not holding my breath so far.

New Vegas F1 race increasingly likely as talks progress

Formula 1’s bid to add a race in Las Vegas is progressing and a deal for a third grand prix in the United States looks increasingly likely.

As previously reported by The Race, F1 has been in discussion with authorities in Las Vegas about a potential return to the city for the first time in almost 30 years – possibly on a street track incorporating its famous strip.

Las Vegas has been linked with an F1 race on various occasions over the last two decades without any notable progress but F1’s discussions with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority have moved along positively.

It has even been suggested the race could be staged as early as 2023.

    Image Unavailable, Please Login

As outlined last year, the city looked increasingly like a priority for a new grand prix, alongside a second race in China.

More races is part of an F1 expansion project in the United States, where F1 owner Liberty Media is based.

A Vegas race would follow the addition of Miami to the calendar, as the Florida city will hold its first grand prix in May 2022, and join the existing United States GP in Austin – which still needs to secure a new deal this year.

The Vegas convention authority is a government agency and the power player in the casino-filled city. As a tourist destination, Vegas suffered during the COVID-19 pandemic, and it has a history of hosting major sporting events – so an F1 race has long been seen as a good fit.

F1 has not had three races in the United States since 1982, which was also the last time Vegas was on the calendar.

Adding more races in the USA and the general expansion of the F1 calendar, which is set to feature a record 23 races in 2022, comes with potential problems.

It is almost certain that F1 will need to start rotating races as a Vegas race plus China’s return – possibly with two grands prix to market new Chinese driver Guanyu Zhou – will take it past its 25-race limit enshrined in the regulations.

Also, it was not that long ago that F1’s position in the US was so shaky that the Austin race suffered when the Mexican Grand Prix joined the calendar.

But there is belief throughout F1’s various stakeholders that there is enough interest in the States now to support three grands prix.

Talks heat up between F1, City of Las Vegas
BY ADAM STERNFriday, January 28, 2022
F1 and entities in Las Vegas are advancing closer to a deal to bring a race to The Strip, sources tell SBJ's Adam Stern, and an official announcement could be made in the first half of this year.

Sources report that talks have accelerated in recent months and that F1 and the city are now hammering out exact specifics and logistics of the race. F1, which is already adding a second U.S. race this year in Miami, is intent to continue its expansion and wants to run the race in Vegas as soon as next year, though sources cautioned that any delays in the talks could force the sides to wait till 2024.

F1 has been deep in talks for months with the city, the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority, Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak and businesses around The Strip, and F1 execs have visited the area multiple times in recent months to try to get a deal done.

F1’s effort is being led in part by Global Director of Race Promotion Chloe Targett-Adams. Also involved is LVCVA President & CEO Steve Hill, who was part of a delegation from Vegas who went to the U.S. Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas last October. Joe Saward, a Europe-based F1 reporter, reported in November that “the plan is for the track to pass the famous dancing fountains" outside the Bellagio while running about a mile up The Strip to Wynn Las Vegas.

Should a deal be completed for the Vegas F1 race, it’s not yet clear who will promote it. F1’s other U.S. races are at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, where the venue promotes the race, and the Miami Grand Prix that will be promoted by the Dolphins and run around Hard Rock Stadium.

F1 famously held races in Vegas in the parking lot of Caesars Palace in the 1980s in one of the most panned events in the history of the globe-trotting car racing series. A handful of decades later, the series is now aiming to capitalize on its growing popularity that’s come thanks to the Netflix “Drive to Survive” series and broad exposure from ESPN.

F1 declined to comment on this story.

Somewhere in this map they would have to figure out a course and where to put stands and pits if they want to run down the strip from Wynn to Bellagio. I assume they would run south to north down the west side of the strip is wider. Then the other side would have stands.

I'm assuming it would be a night race. Being able to walk over the bridges would be pretty awesome if they would let people. One problem is how the Casinos and hotels stay open with the strip closed. Its possible but difficult with lots of traffic due to the shutdown.

Just roughly I would say Sands Ave down the strip to Harmon (Citycenter) then Paradise north to Flamingo then West to Koval north to the MSG sphere then west to Paradise then North to Sands and back West to the strip going around the Wynn golf course. Perhaps pits could be in the Hughes business center or the LV Convention center on Paradise.

Some of these streets would need to be repaved as they are not flat enough, particularly around Paradise and Harmon. The rest isn't too bad.

And actually this is not the City of LV. Its Clark County.

Local press about what's going on.

Chances of F1 race on the Las Vegas Strip are ‘very real
    https://www.reviewjournal.com/sports/motor-sports/chances-of-f1-race-on-the-las-vegas-strip-are-very-real-2520481/

With Las Vegas quickly becoming a mecca for professional sports, Formula One is looking to host a race on the Las Vegas Strip.

A source with intimate knowledge of the situation told the Review-Journal the prospects of an F1 race happening on the Strip are “very real.” Talks have been occurring on the matter for at least six months, the source said. Race officials are eyeing possibly starting the race at the Bellagio near Flamingo Road and heading north. The portion of the Strip would be temporarily shut down to host the race.

F1 apparently isn’t looking at the Las Vegas race as a one-time event. The source indicated Las Vegas stop could become their flagship U.S. race.

It is unclear if the Las Vegas race would be in 2022 or 2023. The 2022 F1 schedule has been released and Austin, Texas, will host its eighth event while Miami has been added for a race this year. An F1 spokesperson declined comment Friday, saying “we do not comment on speculation regarding matters like this.”

Not only would the race be a huge event for F1, it would be important to Las Vegas as it would attract a large amount of international visitors. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority is pushing hard to land the race, the source said.

The LVCVA declined to comment Friday on the possibility of hosting an F1 race on the Strip. The global appeal is evident. The international TV audience for Formula One in 2020 was 433 million viewers, a slight decrease from 2019. However, interest in the U.S. grew with the 2021 Formula One season garnering an average of 934,000 viewers per race on ESPN, an 54 percent increase compared to 2020.

Aside from the allure of hosting a race on one of the most famous streets in the world, F1 officials see the existing areas that fans could view the race from as appealing, the source indicated. Specifically, the pedestrian bridges that are constructed across several portions of the Strip were seen as valuable assets for the spectator experience. The number of available hotel rooms Las Vegas is also a factor in F1’s interest in Las Vegas, the source said.

Race officials would have to pay for temporary road improvements on the Strip, mainly tied to sealing sewer manholes, as F1 race cars travel so fast those covers can be lifted out of the ground, the source said. Plans would also call for barriers to be constructed on the sides of Las Vegas Boulevard to protect spectators watching from those vantage points.

This would not be Las Vegas’ first F1 race. The circuit held the Caesars Palace Grand Prix in 1981-82 in the resort’s parking lot.
