    I'm not sure if it's because of the popular TikToker Daniel Mac or what, but almost every time I take my 458 out I've got people asking me "What do you do for a living?"

    I'm about 50/50 so far with honest answers or just having a little fun.

    Anyone else getting this lately?

    Maybe twice a month in the past six years. But more lately in the Daniel Mac style, yes. To the point that the young guys say it like him, “What do you DO for a living!?!”

    i tell them. And repeat the same advice:
    1) develop a skill through a school or trade apprenticeship;
    2) learn the business side of the operation for a few years;
    3) own your business. Add 5-10 years.

    also
    4) don’t get addicted to anything
    5) don’t have kids out of wedlock, marry first!

    I remember asking this question to Mark Patrick/Patrick motorsports. We were building a home for him next to Yellowstone park. I was probably 21 years old? I tried to be very polite about it and remember my reason for asking was so to align my goals in a way that I may be in his shoes financially later on. :) Kids..

    I get asked it all the time. It is somewhat annoying but I feel that the person is trying understand how wealth is generated and not trying to be antagonistic. They want to gauge if it is even remotely possible if they can hop on that journey.

    Comes with the territory....if it seems like an honest question (like a young person for example) I answer honestly. For me this is important since I’m probably one of the least affluent guys on this board, I like being able to tell people that almost everyone can do this with a sound life plan.

    I haven't had anyone not sound genuine when asking me, so I tell them and give them a little direction. When I was a kid, coming from a low income family, I always wondered the same thing. I had no clue how people made "all of that money". Many people don't, and may never, have someone they know who has the experience to steer them in the right direction. Anytime I can be that person, even if for a minute, I'm happy to do it.

    I loathe the “what do you do” question; more so when it’s from a neighbor or person we interact with in a social event. When it’s from a kid I’ll usually try to impart some entrepreneurial and hard work concepts because I believe they’re showing genuine curiosity, but if it’s an adult I usually respond “as little as possible” and quickly extract myself from the conversion. Zero interest in the social climber/measurer folks…

    I don't mind the "What do you do for a living" question. The question I hate is "how much does one of these cost?"

    My answer to the first question is usually to show the my license plate "WRKDHRD", and then talk to them about about finding out what they're good at, and becoming the best at it. I frequently extoll the virtues of skilled trades vs traditional 4-yr college education. In my home state of utah, there's no question which directon is statistically more likely to produce wealth.

    To the 2nd question, I usually wink and say "polite people don't usually ask those questions", or if they're otherwise nice and genuine people, I'll say "about twice what my wife thinks I paid", haha.

    I don't mind when someone asks that. Unless you have a rare Ferrari, anyone can just go on a website and find out. However, I do like your "about twice what my wife thinks I paid".

    Where I live in San Diego I am often asked a better version of that question, "What do I need to do to buy a car like that?" I've had some pretty good conversations with people looking for actual advice.

    I was at a gas station filling up my Speciale recently in NC. A 30-something guy was sitting in the back of a pickup truck. Manual laborer-looking guy. Very rough appearing but friendly. He asked how much the car costs and I said, “Approximately $450K.”
    He just went quiet and looked completely gutted. I think he was in shock.

    It was a lot of fun being asked that back when i was in my 30s and got my first Ferrari, considering i had hair down to my ass and tattoos all over my arms.

    Most assumed rock star, and I usually let them continue to think that

    When I get the 'how much does it cost' question, my response is always: 8 yrs of college & 50 yrs working.
    That usually ends that line of conversation.
