I ended up going with RAVENOL J1C1109 SAE 75W-90 (ordered 10qrt); plan to do the swap come December. I will report how it feels.
Can't go wrong with that .. one of my top choices especially in newer gearboxes .. Sent from my moto g power using Tapatalk
Redline NS has worked the best in all 4 of my TR's but I am always willing to test others. Most have friction modifiers as has been said by others and that is not what you are looking for. Things need to slow down between metal contact not speed up. haha
Shell Spirax 75w140. Will probably to switch to 80w90, but no complaints with cold shifting or otherwise.
I know, but I get gearboxoil temperature on curvy roads when I go fast up to 160 °C with big oil cooler Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
American Baseball term I suspect. Having the ‘bases covered’ means that all key positions have a nearby ballplayer to prevent an opposing team member from ‘stealing’ a base. It means that you have thought about all contingencies and possible points of failure and have taken steps to mitigate all identified risks. Good job!
thank you for explaining "covered". never heard this word in this context. and also thank you for praising my work. yes, I had many thinkings before I started. most important for me has been that the gearboxoil will only flow through radiator when it has the right temperature. that is why I put in a thermostat, and also a relief valve. in idle I have when oil is warm about 0,8 bar, at 5000 rpm the relief valve I adjsuted to 1,2 bar. never tested how much the oilpump ( this one I modified, about double size as normal ) will bring without this valve. so great forum here not only for ferrari knowledge, also to improve my english
If you are having shifting problems, bleed your clutch before trying all the gear oils! Mine had something (unknown when I got it), I put in Royal Purple, no change, but my main issue was the clutch wasn't fully disengaging until after I bled the clutch and it shifts fine now.
That is actually part of the plan...bleed and or adjust clutch at the same time and do a Gear Oil service
Motul now has both types now, with and w/o LS additives. MOTUL GEAR 300 75W-90 - Motul MOTUL GEAR 300 LS 75W-90 - Motul In this case, what do you think about mixing the Motul Gear 300 from above, to dilute the concentration of LS additives since both are available? Maybe start with 1:1 ratio?
Hello all, this is an old thread so not certain if any of you are still around but I have a similar question for my 512tr 1993. It has a LOT of miles on the gear box. Currently using Spirax. I have found I can buy ENI LSX 75-90 (which is the AGIP stuff mentioned earlier). Redline isnt available where I live (sweden). Motul is.... Ravenol is... Any thoughts further from anything that was mentioned above as to a "better" oil than was previosly used...?
Did you ever get to try this oil and what was the result? It seems I can buy ENI LSX 75-90 (which should be the AGIP stuff since ENI owns AGIP)....
fwiw, the only one that has always made an improvement for me is MTL. Going from MT-90 to MTL was night and day in the 355.
I am using RAVENOL J1C1109 SAE 75W-90 in both my late (gearbox #1963) 512TR and 575F1 and both were improvements over whatever was in there from the PO. Shifting was smoother in both cases and unless a compelling alternative suggested, will stick with it for the future. I would love to try the Shell but sourcing it was like pulling teeth when I looked a few years ago…
Previous owner; I bought my 512TR in 2019 and 575 in 2020. Shifting both was meh when I acquired. Next I need to figure out the best transmission fluid / filter for the 456m auto….
The entire series of MT90 MTL etc has no business ever being in a Testarossa. It is a GL4 oil. Gear wear in TR transmissions is already a big enough issue without using the wrong oil. 355 has very different oil requirements.
