I have a 1977 - 308 carburated EU version that sometimes runs smooth but after a random while suddenly loses power. I am not sure if it is at specific warmed up temps but it is never at the cold start. In the mountains at hillclimbs it worsens. It also idles rough when this happens, like it misses a few cylinders. The engine has been recently overhauled and compression when cold is good (did not yet measure warm let alone hot).
It can only be ignition or fuel delivery I would think. Does anybody have suggestions where to look for?
    Thanks.

Check your fuses and fuse box. Had the same issue. Traced back to fuel pump fuse.

Ignition amplifiers under the coil, although this is usually only a problem when everything is warmed up. Like after 20 mins driving.

When it starts dying, spray starter fluid or petrol into the air intake and if it improves its fuel. Put a timing light on each plug wire and see if both banks are firing. I've had coils die when they are hot and ignitions that are only just getting a signal with cold wires, die when wires are hot (are both your VR sensors in the distributor good and positioned correctly? the pulse may be marginal and die when the the wires are hot.)

I don't think there are ignition amps on a carb 308. Check that the weights in the distributors are not stuck or sticking.
