Is anyone having second thoughts of keeping the 458/488 after watching some C8 z06 videos?

I’ve spent nearly 35 years in Mercedes-Benz SonderKlasse variants and whilst I loved them as DD’s, my dream car was always a Ferrari…

After purchasing my 458 almost two years ago, I know that I will NEVER buy anything but a Ferrari in the future. I also know that I will never sell my 458! It means too much to me…

My next acquisition will be a 812 GTS… I’ve never been a drop top bloke, but the 812 rings my bell, big time!

The C8 Z06 isn't really comparable to a 488.

The numbers may be better, even significantly so, than the 488, but when we spend upwards of 400k for a car, or even 150k for a car (in the case of a Z06), part of the price tag necessarily includes intangibles and qualitative aspects that numbers simply cannot quantify.

Not to belabor a somewhat hackneyed analogy, but it's like watches / timepieces.

A Timex will always tell time better than a Patek, and offer in many cases infinitely more functionality than the Patek, but a person that buys a Patek isn't doing so much to tell time, or to figure out the date/month/year, or even to time something down to the fraction of a second with a chronograph, but because of the emotional appeal that Swiss craftsmanship elicits internally. This is something that a Timex, no matter how technologically advanced, can capture.

Same with a Ferrari, when compared with -- what is rightly considered a great bargain and a supercar with a sportscar price tag -- the C8 Z06.

TL;DR If you like the Z06 and the C8, then the answer is just to get both.

 

So far we know absolutely nothing about its capabilities. So from that standpoint, it's a total unknown. Will a Z07 be faster than a 488? Probably. Speaking of course on the same tyres. The current gen tyres have a lot ti do with the exceptional track times set by the 992 GT3, GT2RS MR and so forth. Just ask Lars Kern.
Anyhow, it's a Chevy, nit a Ferrari. I'm sure it will be a cool track toy. I also have no doubt that the full Z07 setup is what is needed to get the actual performance from it. Will it be as comfortable? Probably not. For me the previous Z07 was a bit like falling down a flight of stairs. Ferrari manages to make a car properly drivable, and yet comfortable.

But the main reason why I would not get it, is the looks. My god that thing is hideous. No elegance and just looks odd from every angle. No thanks.

I don’t care how fast it is in a straight line. If I wanted bragging rights for that I would get a Tesla Plaid.

I don’t care how fast it is around a track. If I wanted a track toy I would get a GT3 with a manual.

It is an amazing car for the money. As are ALL Corvettes. I’ve owned a couple and enjoyed every minute of driving them. Having said that, no, I will not be cancelling my F8 order to order a Corvette Z06.

 

I am going to stick with the 488. I’ve had a few corvettes which I enjoyed but they were not Ferrari.

Aboso-fn-lutely not! Ferrari over a Chevy any day.....
However, it's a suite ride for sure and a lot of bang for the buck.

 

The more I think about it, the more I'm reminded of this review (fast forward to 5:35 when Clarkson compares the C6 ZO6 to a Ferrari 575...."If a Martian came to earth...).

I think a similar comparison could be made between the C8 ZO6 and a 458 Italia...maybe even a 458 Speciale given how similar the numbers are "on paper."

Ferrari won't lose any customers, because there are more customers than there are allocations. I could see the person buying a new 296 or 812 buying a Z06 in addition to their Ferrari, but not replacing it. On the used market, I'm sure there will be people who buy a Z06 instead of an older Ferrari.

I had a C7 Z06 it was a go-fast appliance. On paper it performs better than my 458, but that isn't the point; much like how a $100 G-Shock watch keeps better time than my Rolex.

 

It’s like comparing a Honda Gold Wing to a Harley Ultra Road Glide. Which is actually a better bike? The Gold Wing, however I would buy 10 Harleys before I bought a Gold Wing.
Which one would I feel the most comfortable riding to Alaska? Probably the Gold Wing, but I’d buy the Harley instead.

It all comes down to a certain feel and pride of ownership. The Corvette is a great car, but it’s not a Ferrari!

This is 100% spot on, I would definitely add it to my stable, but never replace my 458 for a Vette.....
PS: Your Rolex probably needs service! lol I've owned a Datejust since '98 and when they start needing, they are 5 min slow, then they stop period. Since my service, spot on!

 

My thoughts exactly. That is why I put a deposit on Z06. I will keep my F cars but Z06 will a perfect car for track days and have a warranty

IMO way off here. If one would choose a Chevy over a "Ferrari" 458, because of performance similarities, one doesn't truly appreciate what owning a Ferrari is all about. It's way way more than just performance numbers....

 

100% agreed and also on the datejust! lol My '98, w/o service almost 20 yrs later, started running 5min slow, then after a year or so, stopped dead. My issue was the hassle of having to go to Rolex on 5th ave w/ an appointment and all, never wanted to take out that time. Then a service center opened up 15 min from my house, so was finally done and she's spot on now.

If you can buy the Ferrari you can easily own both. I can guarantee which one will get driven more and for further distance with way less hassle. You can have an appreciation for how good either brand is until you own both. They are both fantastic for different reasons least of which is purchase price.

 

I’ll say this, if the Z06 drove like the 488 I’d be very disappointed.

 

I agree with the comments that you aren't just buying performance when you buy a Ferrari or Patek; you're buying a brand, exclusivity, etc. But as a C8 Z06 owner who can afford a 488, 458, etc., as much as I'd enjoy the look and brand of a Ferrari, I can't justify selling my Z06 and spending another $100K+ to get into an older, slower, likely less sonically pleasing Ferrari. As a driving experience, it's hard to beat the Z06 - the engine screams, the chassis is great, it rides well, and it's got great tech. Would I trade my Z06 for an SF90 if I could? For sure. But when I look around and ask myself what I'd get instead of the Z06, I always come back to the conclusion that there's nothing at even twice the price that I'd rather actually drive day to day.

I'll also say this - I drove my Z06 convertible back to back with my friend's 488 Spider in Miami, and in every area other than style/body and brand identity my Z06 was better - better sound, better tech, better ride, same power, same performance, etc.

 

My Tesla is faster and more convenient to use than my 458, but I'm not giving up my 458. You couldn't give me a GM product, I just don't like the styling. But if you like it... more power to you! The Z06 is a fantastic car.

 

GM just fired the C8 designer last week.

 

That's a bit of an exaggeration.
Tom Peters, the Chief Designer retired several years ago.
Kirk Bennion the Assistant Chief Designer retired last week. He's in his mid 60's so it's no big deal.
Was it his choice? When a company says it's time for you to drive off into the sunset..........it's time.
