So I have recently acquired an 08 612 and the dash has been restricted already and should be recovered. I’ve been told that that is just the way it is with a leather dash, and if I order a hide and have it recovered it will shrink again and need to be addressed again in 5 years or so, and it would be best to wait to do it right before I sell it. The problem is I don’t plan on selling the car and would like it to be as close to new as possible. I was wondering if it wouldn’t be better to have it recovered in faux leather? I know that sounds cheap, but is there a way to use leather long term?
    Thanks

Don't know why your dash has been restricted, or from what, but?

Had WAY much less trouble with the cars I've had with leather dashes than vinyl covered ones. The leather stayed supple & good looking, so long as I regularly treated it with a good conditioner (I preferred the "Leatherique" products, but most any good conditioner seemed to work.) They vinyl dashes? They tended to split/crack, no matter what I put on them, or how careful I was to put in a window shade.

Alcantara fades really really fast under a windshield. I'd recommend against this. Also it balls up quickly. Sun and alcantara have their own issues.

To the original poster... Sun shades and crack the windows ever so slightly on those hotter days. Otherwise it should last much much longer than 5 years

Thanks for the input, and auto correct got me, it was already “restretched” not “restricted”
Also if anybody has anyone they’re recommend for recovering I’d appreciate as well

Forgive me if I sounded like a jerk, asking about the "restricting," and frankly - I thought you might have meant "re-stitched."

KNEW a great guy, who could do some AMAZING leather work, and he did a BUNCH of Porsche 928 dashes, but he has passed away. When, if you get it re-covered? I'd stick by my recommendation (and also add "Lexol" <--- couldn't remember that product name,) to keep the leather soft, and second the advisories from technom3 posted above. NO reason that leather can't last nearly forever, if some care goes into it.

Ok thanks, and no I didn’t take any offense! Lol
That’s good to know, it just seems like all the 612 I looked at were bad, and mine really bothers me, I’ll have to see if this winter I can get it out and shop it off to a good leather worker
