I will make this brief and direct:

Here you can more easily refer to the patent because the PDFs I linked use images that are not easy to copy/search on text:
    https://www.patentguru.com/EP3792161A1

    Patent Name:
Car Provided with a rear spoiler and with aerodynamic elements to increase the aerodynamic efficiency of the rear spoiler

    Invented by:
Matteo Biancalana of Maccagnan, Matteo Studio Torta S.p.A.
    https://www.studiotorta.com/en/
    https://rocketreach.co/matteo-biancalana-email_43166171

(Notice, Ferrari sub-contracted this patent, not developed in-house)

The interview is online, via the patent.

Here is the detail indicating the "aerodynamic elements" do NOTHING:

[0036] According to figure 4, the deflector panel 10 is shaped so as not to deflect, when it is in the rest position, the air flow above the rear spoiler 6 in order not to aerodynamically cast a shadow on the rear spoiler 6. Namely, when the deflector panel 10 is in the rest position, the air flow generated by the movement of the car 1 completely hits the rear spoiler 6 (hence, the rear spoiler 6 generates a great downforce and also a significant drag).

    that's it, end of interview.

This patent appears to be a "DRS" device, but, was not fully implemented as described in the patent, therefore, does nothing, because it says it does nothing in the "rest" position, which is all it ever is in on the 812c.

    - - - -

Ferrari marketing is spinning stories that are not based on the entire patent.

    https://corporate.ferrari.com/en/812-competizione-and-812-competizione-two-interpretations-ferraris-racing-soul

But what really captures the attention is the rear screen which, for the first time on a production car, is completely closed and thus allowed the engineers to explore some unprecedented aerodynamic solutions. It has been equipped with three pairs of profiled elements which protrude from its surface and act as vortex generators.

They forgot the most important part, those "vortex generators" only do something, according to the patent, if the rear hatch is lifted during travel. Turns out they did not implement that, probably due to many reasons, for instance, would block the view of the high mount/center brake light, the rear view camera would have to be relocated as it would not work well on a movable screen, etc.

    =====

also described in the patent, but, is only a reference:

[0016] In figure 1, number 1 indicates, as a whole, a car provided with an internal combustion engine and/or with one or more electric motors.

[0017] The car 1 comprises two front wheels (not shown herein), which are driven or caused to be drive wheels by electric motors and two rear wheels, which always are drive wheels as they receive the motion from the internal combustion engine and/or from one or more electric motors.

that's that make you go hmm...what else is Ferrari up to...(for the 812 successor, project F167)

Saw the car in person today too. On pics the aero elements look a little too much, especially in the rear, but in person the car does look good and definitely not too much. The Spider is not to my taste for sure, but the coupe is nice. Shame they haven't put a rear screen there.

Did my Tailor Made build at the factory on Monday and I am really happy with the results. Painted shields are an available option, but only in one size. Also, there is a new TM logo…not as nice as the original. Now the long wait begins… Image Unavailable, Please Login
