Who is running BMC/KN Filters?
Very brave of you to bring up this thread again I've got K&N air filters for about 6 months, like them a lot
Probably everybody on this forum. Personally, I switched from K&N to BMC because the K&N ones allowed more intake noise (so maybe they're less restrictive?) Still get noise with BMC, but not as much, so it's tolerable.
I was more curious about oil contamination due to close proximity of MAFs. I know they are lightly coated, but it seems the MAFs could receive small amounts of oil contamination and not throw a code, but actually cause to run lean unknowingly. This seems more discussed with the porsche guys, even to the point in which checkimg MAFs visually they look good with no oil. Also from what I understand you cant clean the film type element used in our MAFs as you can the wire ones.
This is why I won’t use anything other than OEM paper air filters. I’ve seen no evidence that the paper filter is a significant restriction to performance. Losing HP in an undetectable way due to gradual MAFS contamination, or even just worrying about that, is for me not worth the supposed benefits of oiled filters. Sent from my iPad using FerrariChat
K&N for 3 years now, no issues. They have very little oil on them from new, can't see or feel it, and I wont be adding any, ever.
K&N state up to 50k mile service intervals requiring cleaning and re-oiling. I think I'll leave that for the next owner or 3. I do check them for cleanliness though. Living down a dusty gravel road would change things.
Oils flash off over time too. 50k miles will equate to a nominal time period. I dunno... I used to use these things, but as has been stated above, I don't see the point now. Performance improvement for a street car will be marginal at best, and unquestionably a clean OEM filter will provide better air cleaning. I think these things are mainly just another thing to satisfy owners with a desire to modify, just because its part of their normal ownership pattern.
My car came with what it seems to be BMC filters, and they look brand new. I won't change them... Intake noise is loud and nice in my opinion, but this is my first Ferrari so what do I know .
Alright guys. Here's my argument for ITG Filters. Ran it on my Exige and Scud. Love em. I learned of ITG filters through the Lotus forum as BOE Fabrication went through K&N's , Green Filters, etc.. https://www.lotustalk.com/threads/finally-a-real-air-filter.107603/ Oil contamination of MAF is a real thing. K&N's use oil. ITG uses a foam filter and uses some type of proprietary sticky honey material ... not an oil. Doesn't lead into the MAF. The foam filter is also effective in letting air through. The only issue is it will probably disintegrate over a long period of time, but they are cheap enough. OE isn't supposed to be used forever either without replacing. I think I paid $250 for the pair for the Scud. Comes with honey pre-soaked. Try it. You won't be disappointed . https://www.itgairfilters.com/category/profilter/
Here is why foam filters are best in the long run over alternatives. They don't clog up as much or as quickly. When new, most filters will perform similarly. https://www.perrin.com/blog/post/foam-filter-q-a-why-they-are-the-best
I’d sooner swap in a challenge intake. Real HP addition, and no MAFS contamination or extra wear from a non-OEM filter. Image Unavailable, Please Login Sent from my iPad using FerrariChat
Ive been looking for challenge intake for my 430 for 4 years now. I can find the left intake, but finding the right intake seems to be equivalent to finding Big foot. But I would love a set in carbon.
