This winter will be areal test, here in Portugal we are doing fine for the moment, masks in the streets are not mandatory (but they are in school and at work). Numbers have been rising a bit but so far nothing worying, but we have more than 85% of the population vaccinated, starting from 12 years old, so this helps a lot. Crhistmas will be the real test, i hope it wan't ruin everything.

Portugal has done a fantastic job with vaccination indeed; the best all over Europe.
Not looking good here, but as Christmas is near, I doubt that anyone will dare to take restriction measures...perhaps back to mandatory masks everywhere, and back to remote work from home...

..It's funny because when vaccination started it was a real mess, just scandal after scandal with people with certain connections passing in front of the older ones, etc, etc, so they picked a military (admiral) and put him in charge of the whole process.
The BS stopped at once and from that moment everything was super organized and eficient....no doubt that when it come to organization, the military are the right people for the job!

And the man was probably clever enough to stay out of politics...which here have unfortunately confused a lot of things.
Keep safe, Pedro. Judging by what is happening now around me, in Belgium at North-East, in Germany at East, it's far from being all over yet...

Going from bad to worse in Germany; this morning, Bavaria has made known that all Christmas markets are cancelled everywhere (Munich's was cancelled at the beginning of the week). The Federal Secretary for Health, Jens Spahn, has said that: "we are really in a state of national emergency, nothing can be excluded in the coming days, including a full lock-down for the whole country, non-vaxxed and vaxxed included". The Robert Koch Institute, which is the authority on infections, has just advised: "whenever possible, we urge you to stay at home."
    Not looking good at all...

this thing is really an headache: we are not going too bad here in Italy, but only comparing with the other EU Countries, as infection rate is going high also here. The third vaccine dose will start next month.

We have a top grade general in charge of the process since several months, Generale di Corpo d'Armata Francesco Figliuolo, Italian Army Military Logistics commander.

Well, I would'nt say it this way. At least in France, what is true indeed is that you clearly have people who are anti-vaxx, or anti-pass. But it is not an opposition between two parties, with one party that would be aggregating the "pro", the other one the "anti"; opposition to vaccine and pass aggregates very different persons with very different objectives all along the political spectrum, from extreme left to extreme right.
Besides, at least in France these days, you do not have two main parties, but many more; what will make the next presidential "very interesting", shall we say...

And France being France, no-one would ever dare to be as frank as Jens Spahn, the Federal Health Secretary of Germany today: "Next Spring, there will be only three categories of Germans: the vaccinated, those who succeeded in recovering from Covid, and the Dead".

In NY the numbers are skewed. The largest rate of rise in infections in not in the more populated Southern part (NYC, Hudson Valley) but in the Northwest part of NY, & further up towards Albany etc the numbers of positive cases have gone up

From the numbers I see, in the US it is now climbing mainly in the "Center North Mid-West": Minnesota, etc...

Average daily new contaminations for the last five weeks (42, 43, 44, 45 and 46) John Hopkins Institute figures:
    Germany (pop. 82 m.): 13.437; 18.840; 26.358; 37.682; 49.206
    France (pop. 66 m.): 5.344; 5.936; 7.285; 10.066; 18.240
    Italy (pop. 60 m.): 3.326; 4.397; 5.155; 7.431; 9.375
    Greece (pop. 11 m.): 3.210; 3.687; 6.105; 6.710; 6.720

    United States (pop. 330 m.): 72.979; 75.220; 73.858; 83.753; 93.787
(United Kingdom is still above 40.000 contaminations a day on average, as it has been since July 19th, the day they lifted all protection measures)

As for France, Martin Hirsch, who is in charge of the hospitals in the Parisian region (Directeur Général de l'Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris) said yesterday:
"for the time being, the situation in the hospitals is rather good, and stable, but it seems inevitable that we will register a strong growth in hospitalisations towards the end of the year".
Vaccination figures are rather good, with about 72% having a complete scheme (= two jabs); people in I.C.Us are at 92,5% NOT vaccinated.
3rd vaccination ("booster scheme") has started. Mine scheduled in two weeks from now on.

Should anyone plan to travel to France, beware...remember to wear a mask everywhere.

No, nothing conclusive considering the split in new infections between vaccinated and un-vaccinated. Plenty of Data considering hospitalisations, I.C.Us and Deaths, but as for infections, it is almost impossible to know for sure.

First, keep in mind that the tests are not free anymore, but paying; therefore, the number of persons testing is probably lower than what it has been and should be (= some people that should be testing do not, because they do not want to pay the test), and furthermore, there is a bias towards un-vaccinated people, because vaccinated people are less preoccupied by a potential infection and therefore less enclined to test.

You have to also add to this that the "fully vaccinated" population is now at about 72,5%, or three times bigger than the unvaccinated, meaning that the size of the group, and the potential for infection, is about three times bigger; the vaccine lowers the risks of infection by "about 70%", but that still leaves a large potential figure in an 51 million vaccinated population.

We do have recent statistics for Belgium however, with a somewhat higher level of vaccination, and a somewhat higher percentage of new contaminations, which say that the infection risk is 377,26 for 100.000 persons for the unvaccinated, and 119,30 for the vaccinated. And that 0,75% of their vaccinated population has tested positive.

Of course, once infected, the danger is about 11 times lower for the vaccinated to develop a serious problem and need hospitalisation. Once hospitalised, the danger of dying form the Covid is "about 12 times greater" for the non-vaccinated, it seems.

O.K, a simple update, for what it's Worth:

Average daily new contaminations for the last six weeks (42, 43, 44, 45, 46 and 47) John Hopkins Institute figures:
    Germany (pop. 82 m.): 13.437; 18.840; 26.358; 37.682; 49.206; 57.636.
    France (pop. 66 m.): 5.344; 5.936; 7.285; 10.066; 18.240; 29.338.
    Italy (pop. 60 m.): 3.326; 4.397; 5.155; 7.431; 9.375; 11.733.
    Greece (pop. 11 m.): 3.210; 3.687; 6.105; 6.710; 6.720; 6.512.

Worst country of all western Europe is Belgium (17.162 new cases on average every day last week (= 47) with a population of 11 million).

To sum it up, the epidemy is still climbing, the new "Omicron" variant notwithstanding (= not taken into account for the time being).
Situation seems "manageable and managed" for the time being in Spain and Italy. Epidemy spreading fast in France. Very high numbers in Germany, as in the U.K.
No new restrictions so far in France, but strong incitation on the "Booster jab".
New german chancelor plans to make the vaccine mandatory starting end February 2022. All unvaccinated persons in Germany are more or less locked-down at home.

Well, if our agendas/schedule match, if we can find a restaurant open, perhaps we might even have lunch or dinner together, who knows?
For the time being , and after yesterday's "Conseil de défense sanitaire"" (for the time being...) no further restrictions announced, no tightening of the rule; emphasis put on vaccination, "booster jab" and masks . Many think that the offcials want first and foremost let people to have a "normal" Christmas and New Year; after that, then who knows? Anything might happen, considering also that the presidentials are late in April and that the decisions will become less rationally motivated and more and more politically influenced...

Well France is off the table now:( The spread of the omicron has really put a damper on things.
While it is not causing severe illness in those who are fully vaccinated, it does still infect those and make them able to carry/spread.

Sorry to read that. "Omicron" has not even started to spread here yet; sure, we have a few number of "Omicron" cases here and there, but nothing like the U.K, which is suffering a kind of tsunami, they are above 90.000 new contaminations each day on average.
Here the high numbers of new contaminations (about 50.000 everyday on average) are, for the time being, still only the responsability of "Delta"; we are bracing for the "Omicron" rise scheduled for January...

It took only a week for Omicron to overwhelm the whole U.K...let's see what January will look like.

In the U.K, they are now believing that "Omicron" could indeed be less dangerous, perhaps "only" one-third potential risk of "Delta" to send you to the hospital, but, as they have had 120.000 new contaminations in the last 24h, that is more or less equivalent of a day with 40.000 Delta cases as far as hospitalisations go, meaning that the risk of hospitals and ICUs saturation is still very real.

this Omicron variant spreads very quickly: we are at 50+K daily cases. Yes, it looks less dangerous, but so many cases lead to a bigger number of hospitalyzed people anyway.

We now have to wear a mask also outside. No lockdown, but some restrictions have been just introduced.

I got my third vaccine dose this week: no problem.
