Paddy Lowe left Williams in 2019. He came from Mercedes. The problem with Williams was not enough money to develop the car i.e. Williams needed more sponsorship money. There was only so much Lowe could do the car while he was at Williams. It was just a matter of time for the team to fall further behind the grid. Claire was at the receiving end of Williams demise. Look at Force India at the time......huge sponsorship resume with only 400+ employees yet outpaced Wiiliams.
Agreed, though I still think it's Bruce's team that's still hanging (and coming back it seems ) in there. RIP Mssr Williams.
Sir Frank. One of the defining characters of my F1 childhood. A legend of the sport. His contribution to F1 is immense and will be forever remembered in the history books. A life well lived at full throttle from lights out to the chequered flag. RIP.
Another legend that goes, i really hope his team will recover because his legacy deserves to survive and fight at the front, where it belongs. So long Frank, you will be missed by all f.1 true fans!
At least they're carrying on the Williams name. I don't see Red Bull as any kind of Garagista, not when you start with billions of Euros.
Considering the formation of Williams Racing and its meager beginning, in no way can Red Bull ever be considered in the same class. Those are reserved for teams like Lotus, McLaren and such.
Enzo Ferrari coined the term "garagistes". It was meant as a derogatory term towards teams, which are not funded/run by a car manufacturer. In the FISA/FOCA war Renault, Alfa and Ferrari were FISA teams and well the rest were FOCA and that included anybody who built their own chassis and bought an engine (mostly Ford Cossies) to run it. Using that definition Red Bull, Brawn, Jordan, Williams, Benetton and Stroll team (until this year that is) were/are garagistes. If financial status or the lack thereof is the measure of all things, then I'd say Brawn won the all time trophy for that. They were basically bankrupt when they started their WDC winning year.
Agree. But one must consider the technical innovation brought forward by such teams in an effort to remain both competitive and financially viable. Mr Ferrari may had distaste for such individuals, but it was their perseverance and vision that brought F1 forward. Without them, the series may not have flourished as it did. With it, names who changed the sport not only redefined the cars, but the men who drove them. Frank Williams and such other built the sport to the standard today. I doubt the factories would have as huge a following as it does now.
No disagreement on these comments. I always wished that RedBull would have actually manufactured one road car. They're so heavily vested in this, they might as well be a manufacturer. Soda pop manufacturer just doesn't have a ring to it.
This is why we have single malt. We salute those that achieved excellence both driving & engineering. Red Bull simply is a corporate program to enhance product sales. When it no longer suits their business model, I expect them to exit graciously. I do not see them making efforts to anything road worthy. Too many already are in the market now.
RIP Frank. Quite unexpected news really as I didn't realize he was poorly. A loss to the sport. He still had great energy and such a positive person despite being wheelchair bound for such a long period of his life. I have very fond memories of Williams-BMW, my favourite Williams era. The power of the BMW engine, the noise it produceed, combined with a superb JPM...good times.
