Thought I would toss a pic up of our newest addition. 1943 F4U-1 Birdcage Corsair. I think most of it will buff out Image Unavailable, Please Login
Currently, no flying early -1 "Birdcage" Corsairs in the world. One is nearing completion in Australia but not to flight status. Another is under restoration in California and it is planned to be back to flight. Think the oldest "flying" Corsair out there is the F4U-1A fo Planes of Fame in Chino - it is a later '43 model that saw active combat in the Pacific during the war.
It seems that most of the flying -1 Corsairs are Goodyear-built FG-1Ds, followed by Vought-built F4U-1Ds. The Brewster-built F3As were so poorly done that I think they were all scrapped at war's end!
Will be going back to flying. I'm a believer that airplanes need to be flown and cars need to be driven - not just stuck in a museum for people to look at.
Having an R2800 is great for peace of mind in a warbird or anything else (like the T-29s I flew in during the early 70s).
Can you share with us who will be doing the restoration. John Lane did my -5 after an engine fire on landing.
Saw this one last week in the Pima Air Museum. I thought what a waste to not be flying it. Image Unavailable, Please Login
It may not be airworthy. The V-tail Bonazas have corrosion issues with their rudder-vators and no new options exist currently for replacement. A lot of those planes are getting grounded as corrosion is found during annual inspections. Pet project of mine is trying to develop a carbon composite replacement to keep these birds flying.
^^^^^^ Plus the panel layouts are not friendly to retrofitting new avionics, and the cost of overhauling an E225 is more than the value of the airplane (only a slight exaggeration), and you have to move passengers/baggage around mid-flight to keep the cg within limits.
HAHA just watched you on youtube last night.....i saw your tail number , and thought i got to watch this guy !!
you need a better hobby than watching my crappy videos...lol. thanks pal hope it wasn't a disappointment!

My 2008 Remos G3/600 It's the only plane I've ever flown, 750 hours now. Rotax 100hp, Airmaster 3 bladed constant speed prop. Takes off and lands in less than 100m. Great little knock-about Image Unavailable, Please Login
any updates? from Post #751 https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=10226490423875707&set=a.2051841544495 .
Here is my Evans Volksplane VP-1. I built this plane (from plans) in my garage over the course of 3.5 years, and flew it for 100hrs before selling it. I built the engine also, a 65hp VW. This was a really fun and fulfilling project. I hope to build another plane someday. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks, donv. It was lots of fun...a real honest little airplane. But is was SLOW. I would flight plan at 75mph. If there was any headwind at all, the plane just couldn't go anywhere. I could actually watch cars on the interstate overtake me! But it climbed well and the visibility was amazing from the open cockpit. I have very fond memories of that plane.
